Memoir 1, Page 7, Alexander P. Stewart

"The execution of the sentence was suspended through the intercessions of Genl. Alex. P. Stewart."

Alexander Peter Stewart was a Major General at the time that Woods was being tried and charged for mutiny. As mentioned later in the Woods’ memoirs, Stewart had been a professor of mathematics and experimental philosophy at Cumberland University before the war and joined the Confederate Army reluctantly at the outbreak of hostilities. Despite being wounded at Chickamauga in September of 1863, Stewart went on to rise to the rank of Lieutenant General and returned to academia after being paroled out of the army in May of 1865.
