"disturbances in Mo. + in Tenn. at Knoxville"

Both Tennessee and Missouri were highly contested territories stuck between Southern and Northern culture and economic interests. In May of 1861, both states’ governments gathered to discuss secession. Tennessee’s loyalty was split geographically, with Eastern Tennessee largely loyal to the Union. Following Tennessee’s decision to secede, the East Tennessee Convention gathered once again in the interest of creating a separate state to re-enter the Union. Missouri was also torn between secessionist and unionist supporters; however, unlike Tennessee, the government voted to remain in the Union with a small convention meeting to organize secession. Although the state remained in Union hands throughout the war, Missouri became a bloody battleground of guerrilla warfare.
