Dec 27, 1866 Home December 24th/66 Dear Friend, I only have time to write you a note tonight as I have stolen off to my room and left company in the house (Cousin Sallie Henderson, John [?] Siddie) As anticipated, every thing passed off very pleasantly at the wedding. I believe I told you who the attendants were to be. There was at our house, (besides the attendants) Missus Jennie Stover, Bettie Bear, Josie Glosbrenner, [?] Bettie Bear, and Daniel Wilson. We went to church at Union yesterday, and

Home, Saturday night Dec 8th/66 Much Esteemed Friend, Your letter, came to hand today, and I feel it to be my duty to answer it tonight as my programme has been chang- ed since I wrote to you. in Bridgewater at a Fair. Cousin Sallie, I expect will go home with John Wright. So it is not likely that I will get to your neighborhood until after New Year. I would have gone with Cousin Sallie, had she gone today, as I expected, but if I had, I would have had but a short time to have staid, as I will be very busy betweent his, and the 20th. Excuse this short and hasty note as I am in a great hurry. I have several letters to write tonight to correspondents long neglected. I will write as soon as the wedding is over, before I go to Bridgewater, if I can. As ever Your friend Frank

Friday night November 30th/66 My Dear Friend, I rec’d your letter yesterday, and for several reasons will answer to-night. I have fitted up a room for myself this winter, apart from the rest of the family, and just moved in it this evening. I have it fixed up very comfortable, and have but one objection to it, and that is, that it looks so old-bachelor like. I have, for the last two hours been looking over my old school-books, Latin, Greek, and French except the a half hour spent in meditating and in that short space of mind time, many things that have occurred during my life, has quickly passed over my mind. This reverie, in which I have to-night in- dulged was produced, in part by reading your letter, and partly by happening to think that this day, one week ago, was my birthday, yes, 25 years of my life is gone, and what have I accomplised? It has been a perfect blank. But I will not longer reflect on a subject, which only produces sadness. I find in your letter this sentence – “There was something bearing on my mind, when I last wrote to you, and, I often feel sad from the same cause.” As it only concerns yourself, and one other, of course I have a curiousity to know what it is, but more particularly, who it is. I don’t suppose that I am the person of whom you speak. You say “if you knew that he would answer two or three questions, the secret should be his, and you would feel relieved.” Here is a mystery to me, why you do not ask him those questions. If I am that

person, (which I don’t suppose I am) I would certainly consider it a duty, and pleasure to answer any questions you might think proper to ask me. If I am not the person, of course, you have no right to tell me anything about it, unless you do so of your own free will, and in this case, if it was in my power in any way to favor you, it would certainly a pleasure for me to do so. I was only joking, in pretending to understand it, for it is an inpenetrable mystery to me. Cousin Sallie Heizer wrote to me to meet her at Hebron next Sabbath, and she would come down with me. I don’t know how long she wishes to stay, but I want to visit your neighborhood the last of next week, If I can, or the first of the week following. If I do not go then, I don’t want to go for seve ral weeks, as it will not suit me to be out of the neighborhood the last of next month (December) for reasons, which you will probably surmise, Suppose you rmember what I told you in Staunton. Please say “nary word” to any one about it, I hope however to see you before that time, and I will give you a full history. You are the only one that I have mentioned it to at all, although I have been “quizzed” very closely. I rec’d a letter from Miss Gertie some time ago. She wrote to me that she expected to come to Staunton last week, and if she did, she was coming out to see me, but I have not seen or heard from her since. If I take Cousin Sallie home I will go up in the carriage, and if I find out that she is at home, I will take you down to see her, if you will go. By the way, I cant ride about in a buggy or carriage by myself, and if I can make it suit I will bring

Cousin Melissa B over to see you, and the next day we will all to go see Gertie. What do you think of the arrangement? Try and find out if she is at home, and write as soon as you receive this, if you can, so I can get it the last of next week, or the first of the week following, if I do not go up next week. I went to singing at Hebron last Saturday, got there just in time to get a nice dinner, had a very nice time, went to John Wright’s that night, and as usual enjoyed myself finely. It is one of the most pleasant places I ever visited. The whole family do every thing in their power to entertain you. I consider Cousin John one of the most worthy young men of my acquaintance. Do you know at what time Mr. Meller[?] and Cousin Mary B. will be married? I don’t want to happen in at that time. When you reflect that all(?) of your friends are going to marry, and leave you, console yourself that I, as well as some others are in the same condition I think you will have plenty of company. Joe Wilson rec’d a letter from George yesterday, he got out to Lewisburg safe, had rented two rooms, and taken a few pictures, and had a prospect of getting just as much as he could from another source. No doubt of it at all. Mr Burdett says he is deeper in love than any fellow he ever saw, wonder who with, do you know? “Rather speck” you do. It is all “time all honest persons were in bed.”, so for to-night I will close. Goodnight, and pleasant dreams. Saturday night Dec 1st I have heard some news this evening which will be sad news to you, as well as myself. Miss Mattie Cook is at

Mr Lindseys near Parnassas[?] and has diptheria very badly, not expected to live at all. I regard Miss Mattie one of my very best friends, and I am sorry indeed to hear of her illness. One of Mr Lindseys children died yesterday of dip theria, and was buried to-day, and one or two others are quite sick. Miss Josie Glosbrenner spent the day here to-day, but I was so very busy I could find but little time to enjoy her company. She told me if I wanted to be at her wedding, I would have to be more sociable in future than I have been in the past, and call and see her occasionally. She is lonely, I know and I know how to sympathize with her, but oh how much worse it will be with me in a few weeks. I really don’t know what I will do with myself. I have not seen Jennie S for several weeks to have any conversation with her. The last time I saw her, I remarked that I had not seen her for some time, and her reply was, “well it is certainly your own fault.” This caused me to reflect that I could see her anytime, and I think I will call more frequently to pass away some of my lonely hours (such as would otherwise be lonely.) I will not finish this until Monday, as I hope by that time to know when I will be in your neighborhood. Sunday evening, well I went to church to-day, met with Cousin S. and she came with us. I don’t know when she will want to go home, but I will go with her when she goes, Saturday next, very probable. I heard to-day at church that Miss Mattie is improving, hope she may recover. My love to all. As ever, your friend Frank

I confess I considered [?] a good deal of importance, and I thought it would intreat the one I speak of and that he would answer me two or three questions, the secret should be his and I would feel somewhat relieved. You say you are pretty good at guessing and know how to con strue it, I hope you will give me your views in your next. Tell me who you think the gent is. We are have ing occasionally weddings with us Mr J. H Whitmore of Rockbridge was married to Miss Amanda Miller last Tuesday and there is another lady friend of mine to be off this week Miss Fannie Patton and Mr. Willie Patterson, a good match there is talk of others: but I wont name them now, one of them is Marie Sue Brownlee and Mr. [?]

I believe all my lady friends are go ing to marry off and leave me I have heard the report about Mr Frank Heizer and Miss Jennie S too and I am somewhat inclined to think it is true, I would not be surprised to hear anything now, and I don’t know whose wedding I will hear of next only I know it will not be my own I hope you wull ask me when it comes off as I am always pleased to be at my friend weddings. You speak of the fair in C. Christmas night and ask me to come. I assure you I would be delighted to be there and always enjoy my visits to your neighborhood very much indeed but I am inclined to be a little formal now and as none of the folks have returned my bisit but your Ma I think I cant come for a while yet, as I would rather take the rounds when I do go. There has a gentle man friend of yours as well as mine asked me to go down to the neighborhood with him then; but I have not answered him positively yet. I guess you will have a nice time there I rather expect to have a good deal of compa ny aobut that time, as I always do. You did not tell me in your last whether you ex pected to go to Salem after Christmas or not and it not, where you do expect to go to but perhaps I have no right to anymore. pardon me if I have been too fast. Give my love to Jen- nie and tell her she cant imagine how much I appreciate her pictures.

Wednesday night, November 14th/66 Well, Father and Mother got home safely this evening, and I feel more at home myself, in consequence of it, than I did last night. They are, as you are doubtless aware, much pleased with their visit, gave me a history of their visits, [?] from be ginning to end. Cousin George also gave me a history of his ad- ventures. He enjoyed his visit to the neighborhood hugely. Well, how did you find Miss Gertie? I believe you would like her very much, if you were to become in- timately acquainted with her, but if she goes to Mo, I fear you

will never become very well ac- quainted. Something has just occurred to my mind, that was told me several years ago, and I have not thought of it for a long time until to-night, and why I thought of it now, I don’t know. I was at Uncle Jas Brownlee’s several years ago, and something was said about your Father’s family, and Cousin Mary remarked, “Miss Phebe is to be married in a short time to an old bachelor.” I asked who it was, and she said, “Mr Ott”. I saw you a few days afterwards, and was teasing you about him, when he stepped in the door. Do you remember anything about it? I thought it was true, of course, but the next day when we started to church he rode up with Jennie, I then found out the mistake. Present my warmest regards to the “Old Bachelor”(?) when

you see him. I have not had five min- utes conversation with Jennie S. since I saw you. I think I shall call on her in a few days. I know she ex- pected me to call on my way from Staunton, but I did not have time to do so. In looking over your last letter, I find some things that are very hard for me to understand. There seemed to be something bearing very heavily on your mind. The mor ning you wrote to me, and it seems strange to me, that you should feel sad when you were surroun- ded by everything calculated to make any one feel happy, but as you have resolved to be your own secret keeper, of course I can not expect it to be made known to me. portance. I rec’d three very interesting letters yesterday, one from Jimmie Calhoon, at Washington College, one from [?] Smith at Salem and one from Mollie Mailin in Albe- marle. She is just like a sister to me. Really, I think she has no superior in the world. I shall never forget her for her kindness to me when I was a “ragged rebel”, at the very time that I needed a friend. But she ought to be a friend of mine, for I have proved myself to be a friend to her. I think I have told you about my giving her some information in regard to the character of her lover. She has often thanked me for my kindness. Please excuse mistakes [?], as I have written in a hurry. Love to all, as ever Your friend Frank

Home, November 3rd/66 My Worthy Friend, I had concluded to defer writing to you until father and mother returned, but John is busy writing to-night, and you know Fannie doesn’t talk any, consequent ly I am lonely, and can not think of any way of passing the time, either more pleasantly or profitably, pleasantly, because you have assured me that my letters are appreciated, and it is a pleasure to me to gratify you, and profitably because I always receive, a prompt lengthy, and interesting reply. As I sit here to-night, only three of us together, the question naturally recurs to my mind, “what is home

without a Mother?” Could I speak to her to-night or send a message I would say “Linger not long, home is not home without thee.” It is some thing so unusual for Mother to be from home, that is really does not seem like home at all, but I shall look for them tomorrow (Wedns day) night. I could almost imagine I could see you all last Saturday night, and I sincerely wished that I was one of the number, but it could not be. Suppose Cousin George, and yourself had a “noisy” time. Ha! Ha! He told me coming home from Staunton that “I treated him wretchedly, would not give him an opportunity of putting in a word edgewise.” I apologized of course, bu he said “it doesn’t make any difference, I am going to see her by myself next Saturday, told her so too.”

Well, this is Saturday Tuesday night, and he has not returned yet. I am sorry that he is going so far out of the neighborhood, I don’t know what is to become of him. Well the 10th is past, and [?] I suppose is gone. That remark certainly excited my curiousity. “I acknowledge the corn” That in connection with somethings con- tained in your last letter, but of course I have no right to ask, or expect you to you give an explanation, as you have “formed the resolution to be your own secret keeper.” “Time proves all things” I think I have an idea how to construe those remarks, as I am pretty good at guessing. What prospect have you of a joyous Christmas, in that part of the world?

Any weddings to come off about that time that you know of? By the way, there will be another in Ch’ville next Thursday. Miss Mollie Hildebrand and Mr Goddin of Beverly. It is allso the opinion of some persons that Newt Wilson, and Miss Selie Dudley will be married this winter, and what do you think I heard yesterday? I heard that Mr Frank Heizer and Miss Jennie Stover would be married very soon, if not sooner, but I knew there was no turht in the report, as soon as I heard it, it is, however, believed by some persons. We are going to have a fair, and supper, at Churchville Christmas don’t you think? Now if you want to have a pleasant Christmas, make it suit to be in our neighborhood at that time. It is half past ten; time all honest folks were in bed. I will finish some other time, so Good night

Stone Oct 20th/66 My Dear Friend, Your very welcome letter came to hand last Thurs day, too late for me to see you in Staunton, and I am sorry such. was the case, for had I known it in time, I would have met you in Staunton. I rec’d three very inter- esting letters Thursday, one from Miss Gertie, one from Jimmie Calhoon and one from yourself. One of them contained a very nice photograph, just as much like the original as can be, I think if those taken sitting are much more like you, they would certainly “talk and laugh”. my thanks for it, and rest assured it is highly appreciated I will, if I can, get George to print me one of the sittin gones, as you think they are so much the best. We are to have a wedding in our neighborhood in a short time, and who do you think is to be married? Cousin John Wilson, and Miss Rachel Stanger, but I have to tell you of one in which (report says) I am more interested. My sweetheart (so-called) is to be married to another “Mann” next Tuesday. I don’t think she “[?] to have did so”, do you? And then she wrote to me informing me of the sad fact as unconcerned as though she did not know she had done any harm. The idea of Miss Jennie Wheeler changing her name to Miss Jennie Mann, it is perfectly ridiculous.

Mrs and Miss Stover. Miss Jennie and I had a great time hunting chestnuts, and grapes, sincerely wish you had been with us. Miss Jennie brough up those letters for me from the office for me. I delivered your messages to Miss Jennie, but she has gotten a very good photograph of yours from Geo Wilson. I expect to go to Staunton with Miss Jennie next Tuesday when she expects to have some taken, and one will be for you of course. I have concluded to finish this tonight, and mail it tomorrow in Staunton, as you requested me to write very soon. Fruit Farm Oct 14, 1866 Dear Friend I guess it is not necessary to apologize for writing today. I think as you said in your last, that many of us are guilty of worse offences than that of writing on the Sabbath. I am doing it today because I expect to start to Campbell Tuesday and will have a great deal to do tomorrow, as I will have a good deal of company, and a little more preparation to make for the trip. I was at Staunton last Friday week and got your letter in Greenville as I went through. I had my pictures taken that day. I had mine taken standing and three sitting. The last named posture is so much the [?] that I am sorry I have not the [?] of them. I send you one of the stan ding ones, and if you fancy the others ---1 (writing continued on page 1) I am afraid you will be ashamed of this picture besude your pretty girls.

ones most – when you see them, I will exchange with you if I can get some taken off the negative before that time. We have one here that is the most natural photograph I ever saw. If you could see it I think you would almost fancy that you are in company with the original, only it would not talk and laugh quite so much. The sitting ones are so much larger and vetter, the one I speak of is the only one of the three that was painted It was found in the lot and bespo ken, before I had a chance to see them all myself. but I may make some kind of a trade and get it back again. I have on eof the large ones yet that is not painted, but I will have a half dozen copied and well finish ed off and they will be for distribution after awhile. I would much rather I had one of them to send you now as they are so much more distinct, and natural.

Perhaps you can make some arrangeme nt with your Cousin George to get on of them, beofre I will have a chance to have any of them copied. Tell Jennie + your Ma I intend for them to have mine but I have not a chance to send them now. I will be in Staunton Tuesday even ing + all night, as we expect to start on Wednesdays train. I would ask you to meet us in Staunton Tuesday and [?] if I thou ght the Album you could get the letter in time and it would not submit you to an in convenience to make the trip. I would like very much to have you meet us there. I received a pressing invitation from Mr Burdett to spend the night with him, but have not decided whether we will stay there or at Col Lillys. I hope to see you pretty soon after I return from Eastern Va. I said in my last that I made it a rule to excha nge pictures, and of course I will not make as particular a friend as yourself an exception to that rule, no, no I want you to have one of your best ready for the

Home September 30th/66 My Dear Friend, It is not my custom to write letters on Sunday but I am not one of those per- sons, who “strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel”. I think most persons are guilt of greater offences than this. I receieved your letter yesterday, and as you request an im mediate answer, I will write to-day and mail it to-morrow, as I expect to go early to-morrow morning Churchville to “pay my respects to my plough.” I know very well who your informant was, I would like to say a few words, and

I saw Miss Jennie the evening before I went to Pres bytery, would have taken her up with me, but had no way of doing so, have not seen her since I came home. It was my expectation to have seen you at Presbytery, and have some conversa- tion with you, but was disappointed. I intended going up on Friday, but did not go on account of unfavorable weather Saturday. I went through Staunton and spent some time there, and got to Bethel that evening afte

a great many persons had left, and on Sunday I met with so many old acquaintences that I could find no time to talk to any of them. I hope in a month of so, I will have a little leisure time, which I will spend in visiting. Miss Jennie told me the last time I saw her that she was very anxious to see Miss Gertie and yourself and would go with me this fall if possible. In regard to the remark you heard that I made about some member of the family I hardly know what to say, because I have not the least idea what it is, and as you “do not wish to put it in black and white again,” of course

I will not insist. One thing however I can truly say – I have never spoken a harmful word of any member of the family. I have always been treated with the greatest kindness, and respect by every member of the family, and in return, I say truly, I am and ever expect to be, a true friend to every member of the family, and it would be a pleasure to me to know that I was considered as such by them. It is true that “we scarecely get to see each other.” It has been the case in the last year, and I admit that this has been my fault. No doubt each one of us has placed misconstructions[?] on what the other has written. The time for all this I hope is past, and we shall in future

consider each other friends. I have been such in the past, am now, and ever expect to be. You have at last given me a positive answer, in regard to the photograph. You say “you make a bargain with all your friends who get them, to give you theirs in return.” Do you wish to make the same bargain with me? If os, of course you shall be gratified. I infer that this is your wish, from your letter, but would much rather you had been candid enough to have said so. Pardon me for speaking so plainly, you know it is natural for me to do so. Fruit Farm September 24/ 1866 [?] Friend Frank I recieved your letter the 12th, and thought I would put off answering it a little longer, than I did when they had a good way to go. My reason for putting it off was because I have been so busy, and thought as it had such a short distance to go that you would not notice the difference. I am very busy fixing to go to Campbell, will start in about two weeks if nothing prevents Sister is sick today, was suffering so much yesterday evening that she could scarcely get home. It is either neuralgia or inflammatory rheuma- tism + is suffering intensely today ---1 (cont’d on page 1) and can scarcely think yet that nay one that seemed to be the [?] you did, would say sucha thing without any provocation, and I am perfectly uncon- scious of ever having done any thing to wound your feelings. I have spent many an unhappy moment thinking of it, and I would reason myself out of the conclusion that it was the case your actions did not so strongly to prove it. If it is so I can nev er forget it; but I have not a hard feel ing against you in the world and I hope it never may be the case, no God forbid that we shall ever be enemies. I wrote to you once about the remark I speak of and that point was never answered, and I never expect to put it in black and white again

I left the “State of Pendleton” the 22nd of August, and consequently did not receive your letter until since I came home. When I came home, I found a letter here for me, from a lady friend in Albe- marle, dated June 27th. I wrote to her in April, and she replied in a few days, but I did not receive it, and she supposed I did not, as she received no reply from me, and wrote again in June. John wrote to me, intending to send her letter to me, but forgot to enclose it, and did not find out

that he had forgotten it until since I came home. I wrote to her immediately of course, and made an explanation, hope it will be satisfactory, have not read a reply yet. It was my expectation when I came home, to have gone to Roanoke College this session with the intention of taking a thorough course, but have since changed my mind, and it is now my intention to remain at home. I have been hard at work since I came home, particularly today, I am so nervous I can scarecely write. I expect to be very busy this fall and winter, am afrais I will not find much time to visit. I have seen Miss Jennie several times since I came home, but have not had time to have much

conversation with her. I have said nothing to her in regard to taking a visit to your neigh borhood, as I don’t think I could possibly go for some time yet, though it is my intention to be at Presbytery, a day or two if possible But to your letter, in the first place Geo W. has changed his mind in regard to getting married. He is now talking very seriously of going West, this Fall. The “one person in particular that I wished to see married” you are slightly acquainted with, will give you the particulars when I see you. It is not Miss Jennie. I don’t think there is a probability of her being married very soon. I don’t believe now that it is at all probable, we will have a wedding in our

neighborhood this winter, really, I don’t wish to see any of my most intimate friends married, for they are completely lost to society. Did I not feel that I am so well acquainted with you, and know that it is not your disposition, I would think that a couple of sentences in your letter was intended to wound my feelings, but I cannot believe this was your intention. You say “you think that I am a friend of yours, or that I once was, and you are sure you never gave me any reason to be an enemy, and that you and the rest of the family, have never mistreated me.” I agree with you perfectly, but have I ever even intimated to you, or any one else that you did? I have not neither have I ever thought any such thing. In regard to your photograph, I wish to have it, for the same reasons, that I wish to have pictures of other friends, and would appreciate it very highly, but if you are not willing that I should have it, of course I would not want it

much to know who it is,I would like to know whether I am acquainted with the person or not. When I was down in your neighborhood, they were talking of taking a trip to the cave and I expect it will turn out to be a wedding trip for some of the part [?] Lieut Wood says thte marrying fever has started in Rappahannock and I think from all accounts it will soon com mence in Augusta. It is more than probable that I will get to some this fall and winter. I have just now receieved a very strong solicitation that will show for itself afte a while. It was to act as bridesmaid before a great while, the letter was very affecting to ne; but if I am so fortunate as to get to it, perhaps the joy mingled with the sorrow will keep it from being so poignant. It is one of my best friends that are only about three friend that I have been on as intimate terms

She is like a sister to me, and of course we will not be as intimately associa ted hereafter. I feel somewhat like I did when Annie Harris was married; but the circumstances will be very different as the one will be near enough for me to see her whenever I want and the other I may never see again I may possibly be favored with an invitation to some others but I don’t know certainly when they will come off. You rather complain about me not promising you my photograph. I have not had any taken yet + don’t know how soon I will have an opportunity of having any taken. I think you are are a friend of mine, or you once were and I am sure I have never given you, any reason to be an enemy or anything of the kind. I as well as the rest of the family, never have mistreated you in the least.

Received August 8, 1866
Mouth of Seneca, W.Va July 22nd 1866
Friend Annie, I received a letter from you yesterday week, dated July 3rd, just 12 days on the road. No doubt you think I put off writing to you a long time after I receive you letter, but I don’t. I will not mail this letter until next Thursday the 26th, and then it will be 10 or 12 days before it reaches you. Your last letter was dated July 3rd and you cannot possibly write again before the 10th or 12th of August. Thus you see, we cannot average

A letter a month. I just make this statement merely to show you why it is that you receive so few letters from me. We only have weekly mail at this place, and your last letter should have been answered last week, and mailed last Thursday, instead of next Thursday, but I suppose I am like every one else–don’t always do my duty. A question contained in your letter before this last one, has just occurred to me, which I neglected answering in my last, and will be answer now, and comment on it. The question was thils—”I suppose if you had my photograph, your Album is filled, and you would not have room for mine, would you? My Album is filled, but did I have

yours, some one would be taken out to make room for one more worthy, But why did you make such a remark? If I had not wanted yours, I would not have asked for it, and had I not been a friend of yours, I would not have wanted it. Why then refuse to let me have it? As you have not promised to comply with my request, I consider it equivalent to a refusal. Silence does not in all cases give consent. I believe I wrote in my last letter to you that George has gone home. I think he has an idea of getting married some time this fall. I expect to get to several weddings this fall, ni our neighborhood, one at least I hope. I have one friend that I would like very much to see married this fall. on my coming home to assist him and I feel it to be my duty to do so, however, if I can make it suit I want to go, either to Roanoke College, or Monongalia Academy next sessions. I expect however that it will not suit me at all to leave home. I expect to be at home by the 20th of next month. If you write to me soon after you receive this, I will get your letter before I go home, should I not get it I will have it, with all others that come to Mt. Freedom for me, ordered to Churchville. I expect to go with a wagon to New Creek for goods, starting tomorrow morning, I have a box of material there, and can have it brought up in the wagon. The next time I write to you I expect to be at home, perhaps I can then give you some news. As ever your friend, Frank My kindest regards to all Mt. Freedom Pendleton Co. W. Va

I don’t expect to be at home after today, scarcely any this week, and thought that I ahd best write if it was, bad done it would perhaps be somewhat appreciated. You ask how I was pleased with Miss Sue Wilson. I was very much pleased with her indeed. I think her a very nice aldy and would be happy to have a visit from her.

In regard to Miss Jennie s friendship for me, she seems to be a warm friend of mine and I appreciate her very much. I have had no reason for thinking it was not genuine. I am pleased with the idea of her visiting me hope she will not disap point me. I want you to ascertain exactly when it will suit her to comeand let me know, fot it might be possible that I would be away from home if you don’t I have always wanted an Album ever since I knew there were such thin hs and determined that when times become settled I would have one and get my friends pictures if possible. I intended buying one and getting my friends pictures; but of course I will appreciate one far more highly if presented by a friend I did not expect such good luck as that

Tell Jennie that I have not had an opportunity of having my picture taken for her yet; but I want her to have hers taken for me before she comes up. I want her to be sure + have it done. I want it very badly. We are going to have a Barbeque and public speaking in a grove near Greenville the 21st of July expect to have a great time I believe. Perhaps it will suit you and Jennie to come then, I guess you would enjoy it very much. I guess they will have music but I don’t think there is any dan cing in the programme, or anything carousing. I hope you will excuse this miserably written concern. I am not in the habit of complaining or making excuses; but an apology is necessary this time. Love to Jennie if you see proper to deliver. I will expect to hear from you shortly. All send regards In great haste Your Friend Annie

Mouth of Seneca, W. Va June 6th/66 Dear Friend Annie, I received your letter yesterday, and as this is a cloudy day, and I can do nothing else I write to sev eral of my friends. I am kept so busy in good weather, that I cannot get time to write. I have received three letters, giving an account of your late visit, one from Johm, one from Miss Jennie, and one from yourself, was pleased to hear that you had a pleasant visit. I am sorry that I was not at home, had I known in time that you were all coming I would have been there too. I am very glad

That you met with so many of our Churchville ladies. How were you pleased with Miss Sue Wilson? She is one of my best friends, and I think one of the nicest ladies in the neighbor hood. I think from Miss Jennie’s letter, that she is certainly a friend of yours, and I consider her one of the best girls in the world. I expect to be home in a month or two to spend a couple of weeks, and if I do, you may expect a visit from Miss Jennie and myself or it will be her fault. It is not my expectation to follow this business much longer, unless I [?] [?] a sta tionary Gallery in some town. This is entirely too inconvenient for me. Unless the weather is clear. I thought some time ago, that I would come to Greenville to take some pictures, but I don’t? think now that I will. We have two very nice Albums on hand, each of them con- taining 20 pictures. Unless you would like to have a large one, I will keep one of these until I see you, and make you a present of it, if you will accept. It is a very neat Album for the size I will close for the present, as the mail leaves in a short time. My kindest regards to the family. Please write very soon, or I may not get it. and spent the day, and John and myself stayed all night but Cap Marie Fannie and Meliss went to spend the night with Bettie Bear. We had quite a pleasant night Maggie Ott and Mrs Cooper were there that night too We went back to your Pa’s Tuesday as John had invited some ladies in to see us. Miss Allie Hanger, Miss Josie Miss Jennie, Miss Sue Wilson and Miss Bettie and Mr Smith came. Missus Sues, Jennie, and Bettie and Mr Smith stayed all night. The others left. They did not leave next mor ning in time for us to make any visit that day before we left for Mr. Wm Bell’s which was pretty soon after din ner. Melissa’s horse got so lame that we could not work him after Sabbath day and your brother John brough us up as far as your Aunt Christians, Fannie John and myself went to Mr [?] Thursday and had quite a nice time. Miss Eliza went over to Mrs Knights with us and spent the by the way we had Mr Cal Swink with no that night. We had the finest kind of music. You may depend I [?] eyed it hugely and I think all did. Mr Wright furnished us a horse to put in the carriage and we got home safely Friday evening, that is. Bap and Marie brought me home and stayed awhile, and that ends the Chapter I was very much pleased with the ladies of Churchville They all promised to visit me as soon as possible. I think a great deal of Jennie and will expect you to bring her up as soon as you can, hope you will not do as you have been doing, several times in the last six months promise and not perform. If you fail to perform I will contine to construe it in the light of disinclination and have been considering it all this time.

I am always glad to see my gentlemen friends when ever they think worthwhile to come but never insist upon them coming. So rest assured that whenever you feel like coming or can make it convenient – you will be made welcome by every member of the family. Your Ma told me that you bought Albums by the Wholesale in Baltimore and that you sold them cheapter than they did in Staunton. I had expected to go to Staunton shortly to get one and give Mr Burdett a pretty good job. I have given on the [?] of getting mine in Staunton and I’m thinking the Chance for Ma and Pa to go is still more so. I don’t know thought whether we can get down or not. I will ask as a favor of you that you will save me one of your nicest ones if not too costly, and I will pay you your price. I have always wanted a nice one and will trust to your taste I would not be surprised if you could do a pretty good busi ness in Greenville if the Merchants don’t get all the money before you come. Please let me know in answer to this if I can get an Album, at what price and how you charge for pictures. I would like very much to see your Album I guess it is pretty well filled up so much so that you would not have a place for mine if you had it. [?] [?] Your ma gave one hers when I was down Jennie promised me hers if I would give her mine I hope to get a good many this summer if nothing happens to prevent Uncle Wm L Mc of Mo has promised me theirs and I hope to get a good many from our Chicago friends Cousins Cyrus and Leander willb e down with their fam ilies the first of June. Upper Tract, Pendleton Co, Wva April 28th 1866 My Friend Annie, I expected to have answered your last letter much sooner, but have not been able to do so. I left Crab bottom yesterday week, came to Franklin, and started to Staun ton the next day for material, got home Sunday, spending Monday and Tuesday very pleasantly in the neighborhood visiting. Started back to the mountains Wednesday, and got to Mr Kniselys that night, found Sue sick and no company except “Arthur and Andrew”. She was quite unwell, very lonely and homesick. I don’t think I even met with anyone who was more glad to see me, and I am sure I was never more sorry for any one in my life. Mr K. is in West Va, but Sue is expecting him home every day. The next day (Thursday) I came to “the tract” and spent the night with your Wilson. I could scarcely keep from calling his wife “Becca”, she looks so much like your sister Becca, and I think her ways are very much like Becca’s also. We have a room rented belonging to Capt Bond, and will commence operations tomorrow morning. You will be surprised to hear that Capt Bond was Captain of the “Swamp Dragons”. However the secessionists of this neighborhood seem to think a good deal of him, We had a friends quarrel yesterday evening on the

war question, and have promised each other that we will not fall out about it. I have taken up boarding for a few days with Mrs Kyle, but will board with Capt Bond as soon as I commence business. I have eaten with him a couple of times, and the fare is very good and the family seem to be very nice people. Since leaving Churchville, I have formed some pleasant acquaintances in every neighborhood in which I have been, and I have found some of the hardest customers I have ever met with. I think I will like a majority of the peole in this neighborhood very much. I would like very much to know why you think I am so strongly attached to some of the people in Churchville. I assure you I am not attached to anyone in par- ticular. I have an idea what you think about it, hand if I am right – in my supposition, you are entirely mistaken. Miss Jennis Stover told me the other day that she and Mr. Smith had intended paying you a visit, but now she would not go with him, for reasons that I will give some future time, if I have an opportunity. I expect before very long to be at home to spend a few weeks, and if I am not disappointed, it is likely that Miss Jennie and I will pay you a visit. You say you would not be at all surprised to hear of my marriage anytime. I would be very much surprised to hear of it in twelve months, and

It is very likely that it will not be for several years, and perhaps never. I am sincere in saying that I am not engaged to anyone. Why did you think I supposed I was writing to “Miss Jennie or Nelia” when I asked for your picture? Who told you anything about them? I have a picture of each of them, but they are only friends. I have been corre sponding with Miss Jennie for sometime, but it is only a friendly correspondence. She is a nice lady indeed, and I love her as a friend and nothing more. Do you think that I have ceased to care for you, that I don’t want your picture? If so, I assure you, you are disappointed. The price they charge in Staunton for pictures, is 50cts a piece, or 5.00

for dozen. It is likely that if no one else does I will spend a few weeks at the business myself in Greenville during the summer, perhaps the latter part of the sum mer. Miss Bettie Bear, and Miss Gertie spent the night at my Fathers the night before I left home. Bettie gave me a description of her visit, she was very much pleased. Mr Bowling expects to move to your neighborhood next week. You ought to visit her, if you could, she is a very nice lady. Please excuse this awfully written letter, as I have written in a hurry. I have several others to write this evening yet. As ever your friend, Frank P.S. Direct to Franklin Pendleton Co. West Va My kindest regards to the family

Home April 2nd 1866 My Friend Frank I have concluded to write to you tonight, but am not at all in a writing mood. I am rather disturbed by talking but I don’t mind that so much as the headache. I was at Mr. Wallaces today, had quite a pleasant time. I was at Greenway last evening and saw a good many of your relatives. Miss Eliza and some others are going down to your Aunt Wrights this week. Marie Brownlee told me that the company that intends going to your house, will be apt to go in corn planting season. She also said that you would be at home then. I told her that I knew nothing about your wishes and intentions. The sacrament commences at Carmel the 13th of this month. I hope to attend. We are still having weddings plenty of them. I suppose you have heard me one this of Miss Maggie Berry and Mr Christ. I guess you did dislike the idea of leaving Church ville I imagine you are very not only attached to the

Place, but very strongly attached to some of the people. I had not heard that you were married but would not be at all surprised to hear of it any time. I have my ears opened now and am not surprised to hear of any one marrying and of course I suspect to hear of your amonth the rest as it is so fashionable. I think you must have thought you were writing to Miss Jennie or Miss Nellie when you ask about a likeness. I had thought you had theirs already. I would like to see your Albemarle girls picture, I guess she is quite a nice lady. I remember of making that promise in May 1864 and as I was requested to “forget the past” I supposed as a matter of course you had, and that that promise, amongst others of far more impor tance had long since been committed to sombre shades of oblivion. I have never had but the one taken and that belongs to Ma. If I can get Pa and Ma persuaded to go to Staunton this sum mer, I intend having theirs taken for my album You remember I was very anxious to get one while the war was going on; but have never

They both hold out strong inducements for us to go west If I were not the only one left at home with my parents you might expect to hear of me taking a trip, but as it is, I will be apt to remain at home. I expect some way or some other way to have some likenesses taken this sum mer. One of my most intimate lady friends thinks of going to [?] this fall and antoher perhaps to Memphis [?] if Sister goes away she will have all of theirs taken and we will have a pretty good job for Mr Burdett if we can get to Staunton, and if we cant I may be an artist will come around through this [?] of the country some day.

I have engaged boarding in a very nice family for a week, and have the post- office in the room I occupy. I have been getting along very well in business and think I will like it very well. I have not formed the acquaintance of any of the ladies in this place yet, but I think I will next week, as there is some very nice ladies in the place. I disliked the idea of leaving Churchville very much, but it was “bound to be did”. I have become very much

I suppose you have heard that I was married. I went to Albemarle on a vis- it some time ago, it was reported in the neighborhood while I was gone that I was married. I got back on Friday, and went to West View to a tableau the next night, and was sur- prised when my friends came around congratulating me. I did not know what it

Home February 16 1866 Esteemed Friend I have been fixing to go to the [?] at West View tonight; but as I have given out the [?] of going, I will take a little time and write a few letters. I received a message from a friend in that neighborhood to be sure and go, and I was very anxious to go and would have gone if the weather was not so cold; but it is almost decided now. I may possi bly go in the morning; but it is rather doubtful Cap was here a few days since and talked as though they would certainly go. If they go you will be apt to see them. I wrote to Melissa this morning in comp liance with a premise I had made her a short time since We had made arrangements to meet at some one or two places, and I wrote to let her know that I would not go down at all. I had intended beign at Mrs Cooks Mr [?] and Mrs Wrights as I have not returned the girls visits, and have had many kind solicitations from them all.

I suppose you have heard ere this of Maggie Rowan marriage. She married a Mr Barclay from Lexington He represents himself as Captain; but it happens not to be the case. He is a gent of considerable note If reports fly at the veloctiy they generally do you have his full history before this time. My dear friend Annie Carson was down day before yesterday, and we took a trip to Greenville and had a delightful time. Brother received a letter from your uncle Mr Harris that day and they were all well. I was at a Valentine drawing and seen a good many nice ones passing as you are in C. My warmest regards to the family. Nannie C. sends regards to yourself and John. Please excuse this miserably written letter as it is so cold that we are all most freezing and I can scarecly write at all. They are about ready to go to the office and I will have to close, I will expect to hear from you before a great while. In great haste your friend Annie

Jan 24th Churchville Va January 22nd/ 66 Much Esteemed Friend, I will try and be a little more puncutal in future than I have been in the past, for I must confess, that I have been too negligent. I have not had the time to devote to letter writing that I would wish to have, but I hope I will not be kept so busy now. You will be surprised when I tell that I have quit school, that I have changed from a student, to an artist. George Wilson and myself have entered into a partnership, and have been taking lessons under Mr Arbogast at Churchville. We have been in the business only

and now we can both take very good pictures. I was almost forced to quit school on account of means, and it is uncertain whether I will ever resume my studies or not. Though I will do so next fall if I find I can get the means to take a thorough course, I can then complete my education by the time I am thirty years of age. George and I expect to go to West Virginia, in a couple of weeks. We have a one horse wagon that we will travel in, and unless we get a good situation, we will not stay long in one place, but sent a room in the villages as we pass, and only spend a couple of weeks at a place. I think I will like the business very much, travelling about, and forming new acquaintences will be very

pleasant to me. I believe I have no news to communicate at all. Churchville is quite a lively place of late, I have attended several very pleasant parties since I quit school. I wish you could head some of the remarks that persons are ma king about my quitting school. Some persons say that Miss Jennie and I are going to be married, others say that Jimmie C. has cut me out, and I am going to leave the neighborhood in con- sequence of it. It is really amusing. A wedding in this vicinity is out of the question, they have completely played out. George and I were talking this morning about shutting up shop a week, and visiting, but

Home January 11, 1866 My Esteemed Friend – I guess you are by this time pretty well settled down to your studies, since your Christmas enjoyment and a letter from a friend will be somewhat acceptable if not too long. In your letter you told me you were go- ing to a wedding at Bridgewater; but did not tell me who was to be married at all. I heard from you since you came home. I guess Miss Jennie, your Rockingham friends, and yourself had a nice time at Mr. Sellers Our students up here complained that they could not get their minds settled upon their studies for awhile after the holidays and I imagine that would be your fix after having spent the time so pleasantly as you did. You spoke of apologising for not writing sooner. I sh’d think you were rather slow; but come to the conclusion that you were better employed than you would be in writing to me and may be it had got to be an irksome task and if that be the case, I need not ex pect prompt replies. I am happy to hear from you often, but when it ceases to be a pleasure to you just speak the word and I will stop the correspon dence. Really thank you write so seldom and your

I am really happy to hear that you are getting along so well at school hope you will be ready to enter College next session There is nothing I would rather hear of you than, you are going to school and getting along well. We have been having merry times up here for several weeks, weddings, parties, +c +c. Dancing is getting to be a very popular amusements up here. I was at a party Tuesday ngiht but did not participate. There were a good many of the O.P. girls that did dance amongst them. Missus Moore, my cous ins (Miss Rowan) and quite a number of others. I enjoy ed myself quite as well as any of the others I know for I had just the best of company and the hours flew fast if not a little faster. I formed some very pleasant acquaintances, amongst then a very intelligent [?] Four ladies and five gentlement stayed all night at the Col’s and we had quite a nice time after the party broke up which was about four in the morning. And none of us that stayed got to bed until five.
