Stone Oct 20th/66 My Dear Friend, Your very welcome letter came to hand last Thurs day, too late for me to see you in Staunton, and I am sorry such. was the case, for had I known it in time, I would have met you in Staunton. I rec’d three very inter- esting letters Thursday, one from Miss Gertie, one from Jimmie Calhoon and one from yourself. One of them contained a very nice photograph, just as much like the original as can be, I think if those taken sitting are much more like you, they would certainly “talk and laugh”. Please accept

my thanks for it, and rest assured it is highly appreciated I will, if I can, get George to print me one of the sittin gones, as you think they are so much the best. We are to have a wedding in our neighborhood in a short time, and who do you think is to be married? Cousin John Wilson, and Miss Rachel Stanger, but I have to tell you of one in which (report says) I am more interested. My sweetheart (so-called) is to be married to another “Mann” next Tuesday. I don’t think she “[?] to have did so”, do you? And then she wrote to me informing me of the sad fact as unconcerned as though she did not know she had done any harm. The idea of Miss Jennie Wheeler changing her name to Miss Jennie Mann, it is perfectly ridiculous.

Her sister Miss Nelia is to be married the same day. Well, don’t you symapthize with me? yes, I know you do. You cant guess who was at “our house” last Thursday. Mrs and Miss Stover. Miss Jennie and I had a great time hunting chestnuts, and grapes, sincerely wish you had been with us. Miss Jennie brough up those letters for me from the office for me. I delivered your messages to Miss Jennie, but she has gotten a very good photograph of yours from Geo Wilson. I expect to go to Staunton with Miss Jennie next Tuesday when she expects to have some taken, and one will be for you of course. I am sorry that it does not suit me at all to have any pictures taken now. My reason I think is a very good

one. I have not shaved for several weeks, and I want my whiskers to grow out, as I don’t think a picture would look at all natural without, and when I do have them taken, I want good ones. This is Saturday night and I have concluded not to finish this until I return from Staunton, so good night. Monday night October 22nd. I have concluded to finish this tonight, and mail it tomorrow in Staunton, as you requested me to write very soon. Miss Gertie wrote to me that she ex- pected to start to Missouri next month, and I have just been speaking to Mother about going up with me to see her the last of this week, and we have con cluded to go Friday. If we had knew that you would be home before Miss Gertie starts, we would defer our visit until your return, as Mother wanted to see you when she did go to the neighborhood, but as there is some uncertainty about

your getting home in time we have concluded to go this week. Father and Mother however expect to pay you all a visit some time this fall or winter. Cousin George spent last night with me, and told me that “he expected to find out when you would be in Staunton, on your road home”. Wonder how he ex pected to find out, do you know? He gave me a very good Photograph of yours, one in a sitting position, but I am better pleased with the one you sent me, so I gave the other one to

Mother. If you can let me know exactly when you will be in Staunton on your road home, I will meet you there, if possible. You did not say anything in your letter about George calling on you, it makes no difference however as I found out from another source. There has been consierable change made in our home affairs lately, and probably will be some greater changes made before long. Father has sold a portion of his Churchville [?], and traded off part of the remain der for Mr Maddells property in

Churchville, and expects to buy some property to buy some property in the Village, I don’t know yet whether he will succeed in this or not, hope so at least, as it will suit my arrangements very well. Phebe, I am sorry indeed that I cannot comply with your request now in regard to my picture. Really, I think my reason is a very good one. I have promised several but cannot furnish them now. You certainly will get one as soon as I have them taken, and the best, if there is any difference. Hoping to hear from you very soon, I am as ever your friend Frank
