Dear Eleanor: The Sherwood issue of STORY is fine. He lives again for me in it. I was lucky to find a magazine stand in Richmond having one copy of Story, and mine was the only copy of Story sold there in six months! How much magic Sherwood would get into a remark! Everyday words strung together in every day manner except somewhere magic stole in, and there was the soul of a big chunk of America. I felt him deeply and closely perhaps because my own life and education were not the orthodox--the education very irregular and taking only what I liked and nothing I did not care for. Well, I'm glad to have been reckoned as friend, and with such a friendship brought about as a fellow worker in art-an artist should never complain of material inappreciation when the spiritual rewards

are so great. I learned lately that my "Elegy" has not yet repaid Harpers the advance royalty of $300. It has still to earn over $70. My lunch was that $10 would be all that I could expect to realize for woodcut as a job. In the light of the fact that that wouldn't be laborer's pay I am quite indifferent. "Winesburg, Ohio" did not realize $75 the first year it was on the market. Of course I should have liked better a return of $3,000 or $30,000 still better. One of the lessons Sherwood has taught artists is that art as a product of life is like the blossoms of a vine or tree and the fruits of shrubs and trees. The trees get no rewards nor "appreciation" in most cases. But there it is and always the best they are capable of. The artist has to be that way too. I've ordered a copy of the Memoirs; in it Sherwood will live as long as I shall have life which to me is long enough for anything to live. With all good wishes Sincerely J. J. Lankes
