"Sweet Virginia (You Are Not Alone)"
Ian Noe
Oooh baby, hear the sound
Sweet Virginia, cryin down
And oh darlin, 'neath the gun
Thirty-two on the setting sun
And don't the highway roll
While you pray
To the wind you go
Blow away
And in the sky we own
We are flyin home
Sweet Virginia I can hear ya
You are not alone
Oooh baby, see the sky
Sweet Virginia, flyin high
And oh darlin, ease your mind
Come tomorrow, the sun will shine
But don't the highway roll
While you pray
And to the wind you go
Blow away
And in the sky we own
We are flyin home
Sweet Virginia, I can hear ya
You are not alone
Oooh baby, hear the sound
Sweet Virginia cryin down
And oh darlin, neath the gun
Thirty-two on the setting sun

Description
An account of the resource
The collection consist of Marshak's professional and personal papers, detailing his career as university professor in physics at the University of Rochester and Virginia Tech, member and leader in several scientific institutions, and president of the City College of New York.
The first series contains materials on the Shelter Island Conferences (1947-1949) and his administrative and correspondence files on the Rochester Conferences on High-Energy Physics (1950-1957), which he founded. After 1957 the conferences were held under the sponsorship of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and Marshak's files from the conferences from 1958 to 1970 are included. The collection also has correspondence files on IUPAP (1953-1972) and on the Commission on High Energy Physics (1958-1963); photographs (1950-1970); US-USSR relations (1956-1966); and a photocopy of an oral history interview done by Charles Weiner (1970).
The rest of the collection, is divided into eight series. These series consist of correspondence, notes, reports, files, speeches, newsclippings, autographs, photographs, transcripts, proceedings, interviews, and other personalia. Topics cover the national and international development of high-energy physics, meetings and symposia, and scientific committees; awards and prizes, administration and education, science in the Eastern Bloc and Third World, and the scientist as social activist or citizen-scientist. The collection also includes correspondence, publications and articles, and more related to Marshak's books and other writings, teaching and academic administrative work, and research.
Individual series concern specific time periods of Marshak's career, including his work at the University of Rochester, City College of New York (CCNY), and Virginia Tech (VPI). The series also document his involvement in numerous organizations, including the American Physical Association, International Center of Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, and the International Foundation for Science in Sweden. (However, Marshak's official records as president of City College of New York are held by the Hoover Insitution Archives at Stanford University.)
Of special note are several items and files with other well-known physicists, including Hans Bethe, George Sudarshan, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Susumu Okubo, Abdus Salam, Victor Weisskopf, Enrico Fermi, Isidor Isaac Rabi, Mildred Dresselhaus, Richard Feynman, and a letter from Albert Einstein.

Description
An account of the resource
The Smithfield Preston Foundation collection consists of 200 letters written almost exclusively by two generations of members of the Preston family of southwest Virginia, Kentucky, and South Carolina, to James and Sarah Preston McDowell of Rockbridge County, Virginia.
The digital collection consists of selected letters and transcripts from the physical collection, in addition to some brief biographical information on some correspondents, created by previous department staff and available through a legacy system. In 2020, these materials were moved to Omeka for improved access, though rescans could not be completed at the time and some images have a lower resolution.

You Do Not Grieve Alone
Chorus: You do not grieve alone, you do not grieve alone
In the sorrow of this tragedy, you do not grieve alone
Senseless acts of violence, shake us to the core
Family, friends and teachers, not with us anymore
Tragedy that goes beyond the why of reasons fair
We pray that you can bear the pain and rise above despair Chorus:
Too small these words to comfort loss or heal the ache of grief
Too small what we can do or say and yet we try to speak
We hold you tender in our hearts, ever know we care
For love will dawn through darkest night as in your grief we share
Chorus or instrumental:
There's a place beyond our sorrow, where tears become new day
Where you again will learn to laugh and even dance and play
A place of hope where cherished memories of love can be
A place to which we will prevail and wake with Spirit free Chorus:
In the sorrow of this tragedy, you do not grieve alone
"with love and prayers"

You Do Not Grieve Alone</br>
</br>
Chorus: You do not grieve alone, you do not grieve alone</br>
In the sorrow of this tragedy, you do not grieve alone</br>
</br>
Senseless acts of violence, shake us to the core</br>
Family, friends and teachers, not with us anymore</br>
Tragedy that goes beyond the why of reasons fair</br>
We pray that you can bear the pain and rise above despair Chorus:</br>
</br>
Too small these words to comfort loss or heal the ache of grief</br>
Too small what we can do or say and yet we try to speak</br>
We hold you tender in our hearts, ever know we care</br>
For love will dawn through darkest night as in your grief we share</br>
Chorus or instrumental:</br>
</br>
There's a place beyond our sorrow, where tears become new day</br>
Where you again will learn to laugh and even dance and play</br>
A place of hope where cherished memories of love can be</br>
A place to which we will prevail and wake with Spirit free Chorus:</br>
</br>
In the sorrow of this tragedy, you do not grieve alone</br>
"with love and prayers"</br>

Dear Admissions Office,
My name is Vance Thurston. I work as a wood worker, and
mechanic in Montana. To express our love, grief and prayers for
your loss, I wrote this song I hope might be of comfort.
Yesterday I sang it at Pilgrim Congregational Church in
Bozeman, Montana and the congregation sang the chorus. It was
heart felt as we sent our prayers. This is that recording along with
the original recording of the song. I hope it can be of comfort to
others.
You are welcome to make copies of this CD or words and
share them if you feel it appropriate with families, students or
however would be the best use.
Feel free to contact me anytime if I can be of help. I have
already sent an e-mail with the word attachment. Thank you for
your time and help.
Our prayers are with you... God Bless, Vance Thurston

UAB SCHOOL OF ARTS
AND HUMANITIES
Department of Music
Remembering V-Tech!
From the UAB Gospel Choir
When 32 students lost their lives on April 16, 2007 during a tragic shooting incident on
the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg,
Virginia, institutions of higher learning shared in the grief with friends, families, faculty
and students. The shock and horror of this event included the University of Alabama at
Birmingham (UAB) Gospel Choir, who immediately sent signed cards and condolences
to Virginia Tech. It moved Kevin Turner, director of the UAB Gospel Choir, to compose
and dedicate a song to everyone that was affected by this awful occurrence, as well as
similar incidences that has happened on other college campuses that will be remembered
for many generations to come as well.
UAB Football Quarterback Sam Hunt sings lead vocal on the enclosed song entitled,
"Nothing Goes Unnoticed," He agreed to sing lead vocal to demonstrate the school spirit
that reaches from the campus of UAB to campus (and hearts) of Virginia Tech.
More than 125 voices took to the stage to record this song, and a capacity crowd of
1200+ people filled the Jemison Concert Hall at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts
Center on the campus of UAB. On the evening of this recording, UAB Blazers exchanged
their green and gold school colors for maroon and orange and the crowd waved maroon
and orange glow sticks, while 32 candles glowed on center stage in honor of the fallen
students.
This composition is sent to the families of the 32 victims, to the Virginia Tech Office of
Recovery and Support and to the president of the university with as much love and
concern as we can include in this song and in this letter.
Just as it states on the V-Tech web site, "We Remember," we also send our sincerest
condolences on this one-year anniversary.
Virginia Tech - We remember with you.
