A name given to the resource
Sherwood Anderson Collection, 1912-1938 (Ms1973-002)
Subject
The topic of the resource
Anderson, Sherwood, 1876-1941
Description
An account of the resource
This collection contains materials relating to author Sherwood Anderson. The collection is notable for the personal letters written by Anderson to family members. The largest group of letters (about 78 of them) were written to his daughter, Marian Anderson ("Mimi") Spear, between 1912 and 1938. While discussing personal and family matters, Anderson often speaks of his difficulties, failures and successes in publishing, and his interactions with other notable authors of the period. Transcripts of the letters, probably made by Anderson scholar and retired Virginia Tech English Department faculty member Dr. Hilbert Campbell, are invaluable as Anderson's handwriting can be very difficult to read. Additional correspondence includes letters between Anderson and other family members. Other correspondence reflects Anderson as a writer and includes a typescript of a speech delivered by Anderson to striking workers at Danville, Virginia in 1931.
Supporting sets of documents include two researchers' work on Sherwood Anderson. Material donated by Anderson scholar Ray Lewis White, author of more than a dozen titles related to Anderson, includes photographs of Anderson and his family members, book covers from a project to gather covers (or reproductions of covers) not already in his collection, pages that were prepared for publication, and other materials used by White in his Anderson books. Notes made by Dr. Charles Modlin, a retired professor from the English Department at Virginia Tech and author of seven books about Anderson, are also included. The notes mostly concern the Anderson book collection in Virginia Tech's Special Collections and the books related to Anderson.

Perhaps I'm learning a little.

New York Oct 3

Dear Jones—

I got your letter several days ago but have been ill of this damned

Spanish Influenza and in no position to write humanly to anyone. I'm

afraid there is'nt much story to my coming down here. Something came up

that would enable me to have a good deal of freedom for several months. I

dont know the East and thought it would be worth while to come down here a

while. Just how long I'll stay I dont know.

Carl Sandburg came to see em here and said the place I lived in remin–

him of a home for ancient and decrepit trappese performers. He also accused

me of something else. He said I was'nt satisfied to go live in Grenwich Vil–

liage like the other nuts but was trying to establish a nuttery of my own.

When you come East you can see the place and judge for yourself.

been working like a Turk anyway–or was before this damn influenza

hit me. Have made the draft of a new novel and writen some fifty thousand

words of it. Have also written several short stories.

Here is the dollar for the Friday Literary Review. I thought you were

out here to help the struggling arts–not snatching the last crust of bread out of

their mouths and taking away the price of getting their winter overcoat fixed

up.

Very Truly Yours.

Sherwood Anderson

I'll be back to Chicago to strut around part of the winter. You and that

wife of yours go see Tennessee now and then. She did figure she might be a

little lonesome but thinks now she'll get her a dog and will be O K.

Dear Jones—I do sincerely appre–

ciate your very thoughtful and

interesting handling of my new

book. For some reason the book

seems to have led most of

the critics to spout and I have

seen, for the most part, not

intelligent criticism but long

dissertations on someone's notion

of labor, writing, or intellectuality.

In short my plea for less

empty talk has apparently set

everyone talking.

And, in the midst of much

of this, when you come along

and talk sense, giving a clear

definition of the limitations

of the book, it does my

heart good. Thank you

again old man.

Mr. Llewellyn Jones,

Chicago Evening Post,

Chicago, Ill.

Dear Jones:

I certainly appreciate your generosity in

matter of Heck writing the review.

By all means, Jones, I want you to take a

crack at the book yourself. I really think

you will like this novel very much indeed

and I want your published opinion of it.

The whole matter was simply that Ben had

a personal feeling that he would like to

do the job and, of course, we know he can

do it well.

Hope you will have a good time on your

Very truly yours,
