This collection consists of a single letter written by William L. Scott, a private in Company B, 15th North Carolina Infantry, during the American Civil War. Writing to his sister Martha from Richmond, Virginia, on July 11, 1863, Scott describes a recent skirmish (probably the action at South Anna River on July 4, 1863) in which Confederates defended a bridge from destruction by Union forces. He refers to several war-related rumors, including word that Lee is in Maryland.

An account of the resource
The Herbert E. Valentine Scrapbook is a 50-page scrapbook compiled by Valentine, who served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Scrapbook comprises a series of newspaper clippings from the Salem [Massachusetts] News , written in 1911-1912 by Valentine, giving details of his regiment's war activities. It also includes photographs, many taken in New Berne, North Carolina, by Valentine in 1908, during dedication of a monument to members of his regiment. The scrapbook also has Valentine's 39 ink wash scenes sketched during the war years.

James R. Tice Letters (Ms2003-006)

An account of the resource
The correspondence of James R. Tice, a Confederate soldier in Company B, 42nd Virginia Infantry during the American Civil War, consist of three letters written to his sister (Martha A. previous hit Tice next hit Light) and brother-in-law (Jim Light) during the war. Written from camps near Romney (January 18, 1862), Port Republic (June 15, 1862) and Guinea Station (April 21, 1863), the letters focus primarily upon personal and family matters. Brief mentions are made of the battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic, as well as the death of Turner Ashby. Tice discusses in somewhat greater detail the withdrawal of Union forces from Romney and the many provisions captured by the Confederates there. He also briefly discusses the war-time prices of various goods.

An account of the resource
The correspondence of James R. Tice, a Confederate soldier in Company B, 42nd Virginia Infantry during the American Civil War, consist of three letters written to his sister (Martha A. previous hit Tice next hit Light) and brother-in-law (Jim Light) during the war. Written from camps near Romney (January 18, 1862), Port Republic (June 15, 1862) and Guinea Station (April 21, 1863), the letters focus primarily upon personal and family matters. Brief mentions are made of the battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic, as well as the death of Turner Ashby. Tice discusses in somewhat greater detail the withdrawal of Union forces from Romney and the many provisions captured by the Confederates there. He also briefly discusses the war-time prices of various goods.
