I dont know weather I will rent it or hire, if I rent the mill I think that I can make a dollar a day. that is better than I can do at anything else. I just say. I had a notion to go farther west but thought it best to wait and see what the radicals and negroes would do for us all in hour old mother state. I am afraid that we are in a bad [fit] at presant. if we have to live under there laws the thing is mortal. we have radical officers here in lee. The negroes is so few that you cant here a word from them and I am glad of it. I will soon close for this time leaves me well hoping when it reaches you all it may find you in good health</span></p>

<p><span font-size="medium">July the 26th 1853 Henry Co [Ind?] Dear Cousin this morning I take my pen in hand to drop you [a] few lines in Answer to your kind letter which I received some weeks ago I would have righten You A answer before now but I have bin laid up with A Soar hand I had what is cold A [Colarrh?] in the inside of my hand I have not worked Any for 3 weeks of Any Concequence and father was laid up with A [beeling?] on his foot one week in the [hith?] of wheat harvest and now he is got A very Soar hand that he can not do A thing You may suppose we had A tolerable hard time of getting A [way?] our harvest but we are getting prety well through we have all our hay up and oats + wheat accept one field of wheat and if it dont [rain] Any more between this and 12 oClock I think we will go at that we are all well accept our Soar hands and hopeing these few lines may find you and all our friends + relations enjoying good health You rote as if You thought I had forgotten you but I have not I never forget the batchlars for I am getting along that way myself Some of these hoosier girls [leave?] me A batchlar now they [?] A man here A Young batchlar at 25 + at 30 An old batchlar – – – I will tell you something About our Crops wheat Crops is tolderable good in this neighborhood but A good many have bin [thratching] round + say [thair] wheat dont out likes I did last year</span></p>

The collection includes letters from various members of the Godwin, Young, Trevey, Williams and other families of Botetourt, Rockbridge, and Roanoke Counties establishes the relationship between them. In addition to correspondence, the collection also contains deeds, promissory notes, invoices for goods and services, toll bridge fee receipt, a child's watercolor, 13 pen and ink drawings of weaver's coverlet designs with titles of designs included.
