Grabowski While home May 16th 1872 I did not know until your note came this evening by Ballard, that the Taylor had written to you about Hugh + Mr. Scott Mr. Taylor has been an intimate of my family for several years and is a friend to me + my sons and the interest he feels in us, no doubt prompted him to write to you. I ap- preciate his motives and am grateful for his kind intentions. On Mr. Taylor's past ^the statement as to the language used by Leuit[sic] Scott to Hugh was a misapprehension of ?, not an Hugh disobeyed a military order and I am sorry, and much infuriated [to] punish him as you think proper. I am perfectly alive to the fact that he had faults (and who has not?) but his faults are not profanity, immorality, or untruth fulness, and I therefore hope that the devo tion of coming years will teach him the wisdom of governing his temper. An order may be given to a servant in the form of a request without denograting [sic] from the dignity or character of the master or employer. You remarked in your note that Hugh would find as he passed through life that it was a game of “give & take,” by which I understand that if one person insults another he needs bear the consequences. I don’t see in this case how this applies to Hugh unless it is that he took a good deal of opprobrious language without giving any and in reply I will say that Luit[sic] Scott will find as he passes through life, that an Officers commission will not always shield him when he undertakes to insult gentlemen or gentlemen’s sons.
