Beginning in 2021, graduate students supported by Virginia Tech's Center for Communicating Science interviewed Black professionals engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) research, asking questions about narrators’ research, career paths, advice to younger researchers, joys, frustrations, barriers, and childhood experiences. She currently serves as an assistant professor of biological sciences at Santa Clara University, where her research focuses on exploring regulatory mechanisms of cellular differentiation and identifying virulence determinants. Despite facing cultural and educational challenges upon moving to the U.S., she excelled in her studies, particularly in organic chemistry, under the mentorship of supportive professors at Georgia State University. She pursued her Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis and postdoctoral work at Stanford University, leading her into academia, Key moments of the interview cover Dr. Guiton's complex identity as mixed-race, embracing her Black identity in America while facing challenges fitting into both African and African American communities. She also candidly discussed her experiences with mental health, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and being open about mental health challenges. Mentorship played a crucial role in her career, and she now advocates for diversity and inclusivity in academia, dedicating herself to creating a supportive environment for BIPOC students in STEM.
