In high school, he decided to attend North Carolina State College, but dropped out after encountering college chemistry. He transferred to Gaston Technical Institute, a two year technical school, and graduated early in January 1960.

He eventually arrived in Blacksburg because of a job offer with General Electric in Shenandoah. After getting the job, Nolen's boss decided to send him to Virginia Tech for an engineering degree, which he graduated from in 1965.

In this interview, Nolen recounts his path to Virginia Tech, becoming a student in the Corps, studies, his later career in General Electric, and then becoming a proud alumni. </text>

<text>Lorraine Feury was born and raised as a first generation immigrant in Northern Virginia. Her parents lived in Sierra Leone before moving to England for college. Although they did not finish, they moved to America and raised Lorraine to value family and schoolwork. Initially in researching schools, Lorraine did not consider Virginia Tech, but decided on it because of the distance (without being out-of-state), the football program, and research opportunities. She graduated with degrees in math and sociology in 2014 and works as a cost analyst.

In this interview, Lorraine talks about her time at Virginia Tech, integrating into the school, becoming active in the Black Student Association, and finding a cultural community. Lorraine covers the changes she would like to see at the school in relation to diversity, and what she hopes for the future. </text>

<text>Initiated in 2015 by the President’s Office and managed by faculty and staff in History, English, TLOS, VT Libraries, and the Alumni Association, the VT Stories Oral History Project collects and examines stories, memories, tall tales, tragedies, and triumphs of all members of the Hokie community to help us know our shared history and to make sense of it. At the heart of the project is Hokies interviewing Hokies—largely student-staffed and trained by oral historians, interviewers engage with VT Alumni to learn their history and to make mentoring connections that go beyond the student experience. As we seek to understand why Virginia Tech is top rated in its success in engaging alumni, we highlight the exciting, memorable, historic moments in Hokie lives that have forged strong and enduring connections.

<text>April Cheek-Messier arrived at Virginia Tech for her master's degree in history in 1996. Prior to coming to Blacksburg, she attended undergraduate school at Hollins, and got a master's degree in both history and English. In the master's program at Virginia Tech, she found comradery with her peers and professors who facilitated her love of history.

Coming out of college, she worked at small museums and eventually ended up at the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va. Here she works to teach the history of D-Day and World War II, and how Virginia Tech is tied to it. </text>

<text>Thomas "Tom" Hughes, born in 1957, grew up in Durham, North Carolina. Early into his high school career, he decided to pursue architecture in higher education. While there were many programs in both Virginia and North Carolina, Tom saw Virginia Tech's School of Architecture as standing above all the others. Upon arriving on campus, he fell in love with Blacksburg and Virginia Tech.

In his later career, he worked in architecture firms around Winston-Salem, North Carolina and eventually established his own. Along with a successful architecture firm, he opened a vineyard in East Bend. He remains involved with Virginia Tech as an active alumni, where he serves as a board member for the Alumni Association. </text>
