<text>
January 1, 1944
Somewhere in England
Dear Mother,
1944 gosh but time does fly. Back
in the early 1930’s I thought that when
1944 roled around I would be an old man
but here it is and I am still a boy. In fact
I am such a boy that I can think of nothing
better than being at home with my Mother.
One of the ladies in the village gave
the company a five weeks <s>of</s> old Scottie dog
and we have a lot of fun with him. Lt.
Cutler is in bed now and the scottie has
been sitting on his chest trying to bite his
chin for about an hour. The dogs name is
Roscoe, named after Lt. Robert Roscoe Cutler
Jr. - I don’t know if told you or not. “I” Company
has a dog that they adopted after making
the landing at Oran - Dagwood is the old
boys name and he is well known throughtout
the regiment. He made the landing in Sicily
very successfuly but was nearly left behind
when we left Sicily to come back to England.
I’ll never forget old Dagwood that day. Due to the
fact that we had so many pets and that they
would be in the way on the voyage an order
was put out that no pets would be bought. Well
</text>

I had a cat here, Jimmie,
but he got up and walked off one night
and we haven’t seen him since.
Mother I don’t like to make any predictions
for the new year but I am sure it will be
a happier one for us than the last. I believe
that we have gotten over the rough road
and that there is smoth sailing and blue
skies ahead -
Love
Jimmie
</text>
