I’m so delighted that you spent Christmas Day with the Dodges and Jacksons - I know what a help it was to be among old friends - I’m so grateful to all our friends who have been so very kind to you and Nancy. Its a shame that the accident to the car had to occur at such a time - I know you’ve missed it terribly - but don’t worry about it for it isn’t very important and I imagine can be easily fixed - we’ve surely had bad luck with that car havn’t we - why not have Nancy see if the Ration Board will replace the 8 gallons of gas, in case it was lost - it seems to me that they should replace it. I had such a glowing account of Frances and Fran’s day at home and all the gifts that you and Nancy gave them - also about Fran’s first piano lesson. I would surely have loved to have seen her when she first saw the tree and her presents - there will be many more Christmases tho and so I have no kick. The situation in Europe doesn’t look at all good - my heart really goes out to those fellows who are bearing the brunt of this war. If it had to be I’m glad that Jimmie didn’t have this to go through - the armies fighting in France and Germany have surely covered themselves with glory, particularly the First Army, nothing makes me mader than to have them critized in any way. I’m getting awfully tired of the news men fussing over the news blackout - they are surely in <s>t</s> no position to Judge what information is of value to the Germans - these fellows are fighting and giving their lives and I can see no reason why the job should be made any harder for them or any dissatisfaction aroused on the home front. I still have to write to Frances tonight and so this is a little short.
