                    <text>&lt;p&gt;[Dec. 17, 1941]&lt;br /&gt; Wensday&lt;br /&gt; Dear Daddy,&lt;br /&gt; I am on C.Q. and haven’t &lt;br /&gt; much time but I want this &lt;br /&gt; letter to go out with the 1 o'clock&lt;br /&gt; mail. Today Captain Young&lt;br /&gt; told me that he thought that &lt;br /&gt; I would be able to get a Xmas&lt;br /&gt; furlough. If I do, I will be very&lt;br /&gt; lucky as only &lt;s&gt;2&lt;/s&gt; two thousand of the seventeen&lt;br /&gt; thousand are getting furloughs. If &lt;br /&gt; things work out right, I will get&lt;br /&gt; off Saturday and report back&lt;br /&gt; Monday week, seven days at home.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

After seeing&lt;br /&gt; Mr. Dickerson's sticker and your&lt;br /&gt; hand writting, I decided that they&lt;br /&gt; came from lower Main street. &lt;br /&gt; Well, have got to get back to&lt;br /&gt; work here. Hope to see you all soon but conditions being as they&lt;br /&gt; are I will not allow myself to &lt;br /&gt; be disappointed if I do not get the &lt;br /&gt; furlough.                   <text>Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.</text>
