Camp, Near Newport News. Apl. 4 1862 Dear Wife, After a weeks march, I feel this evening again as if I was at quite at home. As I have given you an account of my march up to yesterday morning. I will now commence where I left off. The five co’s on the Georgia, who I told you yesterday morning were anchored, off the Fort, instead of landing there, got orders to land at Newport News. We then got orders to march to this place. The look up on line of march at 11 A. M. (Yesterday) After marching about 1 ½ miles we came to the ruins of the town of Hampton, which was burned several months ago by the rebels. Alas! what a sight! What must have once been a beautiful village of from two to three thousand inhabitants, is now a blackened, crumbled mass of ruins I am told they fired it house by house. even, an elegant church within the enclosure of which, is a burying ground

My heart almost sank within me When I beheld this scene of destruction. After passing that we marched some 6 or 7 miles though flat. Swampy land much of which was covered with pine. Everywhere, desolation to be seen. Scarcely a building or fence remained. We halted about 2 miles north west of Newport News, but having no tent, we rolled ourselves up in our blankets. and lay down, with the ground for our bed, and the broad Canopy of Heaven for our covering. I slept very soundly, and awoke this morning feeling quite refreshed after our march, which was made beneath the hottest April Sun I have ever felt. The heat was oppressive. This even our baggage & Camp Equip- age arrived, and we have now got our tents up. The Spring is quite advanced here, Peach & Plum trees are in full bloom.
