I will tell you something about our move- ments. Last Sunday morning, after eating break- fast, it being a lovely morning- I began to flatter myself that I was going to spend a good quiet Sabbath, I washed myself and was just dressing, when we rec’d orders to turn out the company immediately. In a few moments we were formed in line, with one day’s rations in Haver- sacks, but, no Knapsacks. No knowing what the sudden move- ment meant, we started at once. We soon learned the cause- during Saturday night the Rebs. had evacuated their ranks in front of Yorktown, and&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</text>

We passed on through their fortifications which were earth works of of considerable strength, and extending across the outer Peninsula. We are occupied, or rather Bivouacked, that night some 8 or 10 miles from where we started. The being Cool, and having neither blankets nor overcoats, we get no sleep. It commenced raining about 1 Oclock that night, and having no shelter of course we had to take it. Next morning we continued our march through the rain, the roads in the mean time, becoming terri- ble. We marched until 4 P.M. when we came to the battle ground in front of Williams- burg. The battle at this time was raging furiously- we at once formed in line of battle and marched to the support of the left wing. during this time we were exposed to a galling fire of Shell, grape &amp;amp; Canister, to which our boys faced like veterans. We were marched in and placed about 50 Yard in the rear of the line, actually engaged. Here we were as much exposed as if We had been really engaged- about 6 OCK. the firing ceased, but we remained In line resting on our arms, amidst a denching [drenching] rain until nearly midnight. when we were marched back about a hundred yds. where we stocked arms, and built fires, expecting a heav- y engagement in the morning. Of course we could not sleep in this rain, but set up by the fires until morning. Having only brought one days rations with us, we had nothing to eat on Monday, and in fact we had our half rations until Thursday, since then we have had plenty.                     <text>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span font-size="medium"&gt;field, after the battle it was a sad sight. I’ve not seen any certain account of the battle, but from what I can gather, the loss on both sides will be heavy. The position of the rebels, was a very strong one and if it had been defended by men en- gaged in a better cause, should have been held against twice the force we brought against it, but the Rebels after one day’s hard fighting, evacuated on Monday night, and are still retreating and we are pursuing, We are now in New Kent county about 40 miles from Richmond. We are resting to day- I sup- pose we will march tomorrow again. The country through which we are passing is very fine, but does not appear to be in a very high state of cultivation. Property is not destroyed here as it was [illegible line] A great many families, have left before the army reached here. some remain and profess union sentiment. A good many prisoners are daily being taken I have seen numbers. They all appear to be tired of Rebellion. I think their army is considerably demoralized. Their soldiers do not compare well in appearance with ours. Kiss Annie &amp;amp; Harry for me. This series also has unpublished and published versions of Conley's escape from Confederate captivity.
