Oct. 8, 1862 My Dear, Carrie, Being at leisure this morning. I will drop you a line; but, I have very little news to give you. We have had nothing excit- ing here for some time. We daily go through with our regular routine of duty, and spend our leisure time as best suits our different tastes. I usually go to town about once a day, but there is not much there that is attractive. I attended Methodist Church, in town, last Sabbath. The house was well filled, principally with Soldiers but few citizens were there. Some twen- ty ladies were present. We heard a very good sermon, although I doubt the loyalty of the preacher. I never saw a more orderly congregation. It did credit to our Union soldiers. Our force here, is gradually increasing. two regts. have come in this week. We have now some 17 or 18 Regts. here. No attack is now expected here. There are some vague rumors of an advance movement on Petersburg but nothing authentic. The days are very warm. The nights are beginning to get somewhat Cool, but no appearance of frost. I suppose you have frost in Penna before this. Henry Otto, of our Company, died a short time ago at the Hospi- al [sic] Point Lookout, Md. He is from Dry Ridge. We have had 16 deaths in our company since we first came to Camp Curtin. 13 since we came to the Peninsula. 2 died of wounds, all the rest of disease. The health here is very good now. I hope we are through the sickly Season. We have now nearly 500 men for duty in our regt. We number- ed less than half that during June My health is very good. I have not had any letter from you since I last wrote. Did you ever receive Gen. Caseys Report of the battle of Fair Oaks? I sent it to you in a letter some time ago. You never told me whether you rec’d it. I expect to go on picket this afternoon. I am of the opinion that the rebels have had the last victory, and, that from this time forward their cause will begin to wane. Their temporary success, as you will recollect, never disheartened me.
