Harris Papers consist of over 200 letters written either from or to Harris or immediate members of his family between 1857 and 1909. The majority of the letters are from James to his wife Mary, written almost entirely during the Civil War. These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. May 8, 1863 My Dear Carrie, We arrived here on Wednes- day evening and disembarked yesterday morning, have been busy since in getting fixed up. It rained some during our passage up the Sounds and has been cloudy and cool since we’ve been here. I think this will be a pleas- ant place for the warm weather, have good water. This was a place of some 2500 or 3000 inhabitants, but the rebels burned over half of the town last summer. I don’t think the Citizens here now would number more than 600 or 800. What are here I think are nearly all Union, the secesh having left. The only late news we have from Hooker (Brigadier General Joseph Hooker) are through rebel sources, and they are quite conflict- ing. They report some very hard fighting, and also that the rebel Gen Paxton (Brigadier General Elisha F. Paxton) was killed, and “Stonewall” Jackson (Lieutenant General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson) severely wounded. Hill also wounded. Some deserters came in to-day who report that Hooker is driving them before him, but we cannot reply upon the statements of deserters. I sincerely hope Hooker will succeed, but the obstacles he has to overcome, are three fold greater than McClellan had on the Peninsula. Hooker will do his best. You Speak in your last dispar- agingly of Gen Foster (Major General John G. Foster) for having left his troops at Washington. You have formed a wrong interpretation of him. His conduct throughout these trying times was most praiseworthy. As soon as he reach- ed Newbern he started himself with a land free to drive the rebs from the the vicinity of Washington. Our Brigade formed part of the expedition, the result was that the rebs were to [sic] cautious to show fight, and retreated. Gen. Foster is a brave and skillfull [sic] Officer. We will not get mails very regular here. Nearly all our mail matter will come by way of Newbern. The only troops here is four Regts. of our Brigade, the 101st & 103 PV & 85 & 96 N.Y._ We have several Gun Boats lying here on the river.
