May 21st 1864 Camp [?] Hill May 16th 1864 My Dear Phebe I have an op- -portunity of writing to you again, and as it has been a week since I wrote, I cannot let the opportunity pass without improving it. In the first place I will give you a history of what has happened in the past week. Last Monday morning, Gen Imboden with two regiments fo Cavalry and two pieces of artillery started on a raid to Handy County, and marched till 12oclock that night, and I [?] we felt like resting, for we had to push our pieces over nearly all the mountains and hills on the road, for our horses are poor and weak. Early the next morning we were attached by the enemy,

But they were soon [?]. We then pursued about 25 miles, when we captured their train of wagons, and then marched all night in the direction of Camp. Last Friday evening a couple hundred Yan kees came within a mile of camp, when we attached them and captured about 75 Yanks and 150 horses. Saturday evening the enemy’s infantry appeared in sight, when we opened on them with our artillery they then brought theirs also, and we had an artillery duel about 3 hours, when night closed the scene, and strange to say not one of us was hurt, thought the shells flew thick and fast in our midst. Several struck within a few feet of me. Yesterday was Sunday, and our battery opened the ball early in

In the morning, and we fought nearly all day. After a desperate fight the enemy were routed, and pursued six miles, when They crossed the river, and burnt the bridge in their [?], rendering farther pursuit impossible. We have now fallen back to the place we camped a few weeks ago. We were assisted by Gen Breckin- ridge with 3’000 infantry and 12 pieces of artillery. It is reported to-day that Gen Sigel has been reinforced and will probably attack us again. in a few days. My situation for the last few days, was not by any means a pleasant one. and had I not felt that I was protected by Providence I believe I could not possibly remained at my post. May 21st 1864 days. I will now answer your let- ter which I received when I return to camp after our raid. Did you receive the letter I wrote to you when I was at home shortly after John went back to camp? I received the cake you sent me, and I assure you I enjoyed it very much You ask if I made those visits with Mr. B. that I spoke of. I did not, because we have had no time for visiting for several weeks, though I see him every few days. You ask if I have seen Miss Mollie B. since you saw me. I ought to know who you mean, but indeed I don’t, and as to forming acquaintences, I can tell you that I have formed the acquaintence of no one since I left Bridge- water. (Mother did not know that there was a letter enclosed with the cake until I opened it, I don’t

think. for I don’t believe it had been opened, and as to the something else that you speak of, I don’t sup- -pose that they know anything of it. I would have talked to them about it when I was at home last, but I had very little time to talk to them about anything. and besides, I well know that they will both cheerfully give their consent. Taken me to your Father’s with him. So you think you will not ask the “all important question”? I waited a long time for you to do so, as it was leap year, and concluded at last to wait no longer. I gave you nearly six months, and I don’t believe now, you had any idea of such a thing, However as you are young and bashful, I saved you that trouble I hope to hear from you soon and often. I close by the making the request that you will always in your prayers remember Your devoted Frank P.S. The signature to your last letter amused me as soon as I saw it. I suppose you know who “Flora” is if Miss Bettie don’t.
