I hope, however the next mail will bring me a letter from you. Whilest I feel quite a home with my company, and hope to remain with it until this rebellion is crushed. Yet, I miss the endearments of home. I will look cheerfully forward to the time when peace will again spread her white wings over our land, and we can all return to our families. The news from the South west is Cheering in the extreme- Vicksburg & Port Hudson have both fallen. <p><span font-size="medium">lieve Meade (Major General George G. Meade) did all that was in his power. It was the most thorough defeat that Lee has ever met with. The prospects for the fall of Charles- ton are very good. Rebel papers rec’d here, speak very despondingly of their prospects for holding it. The riot in New York is the worst news we have received. Whilest I believe the rioters will be promptly put down, yet the effect of it is bad. The leaders of that riot have written for themselves a Chapter the most dark and damning, ever written in the history of the U.S. Such brutal massacres of that lawless mob, would have disgraced the “dark ages”, but it is but the legitimate fruit of the Seed sown by the Copperhead party. I hope they will meet their jusst [sic] reward. Every thing is quiet here,</span></p>

<p><span font-size="medium">July 23- The mail leaves this Evening. The weather continues quite Showery- pretty warm, but not uncom- fortably so. I have enjoyed very good health since my return. I feel much better than I did before I went home. My trip did me good. The Sword, Sash & Belt was presen ted to Gen. Wessell (General Henry W. Wessells) on the 30th by the 101st. It was a magnificent outfit, Cost $500. I hope you are all well Affecty Your Husband Isa. Conley</span></p>

The Isaiah Conley Civil War Correspondence and Research Materials includes two series of primary and secondary sources. Series I: Letters, Transcripts, and Narratives, includes 98 letters written by Isaiah Conley to his wife during his service in the 101st Pennsylvania Regiment between 1861 and 1865. This series also has unpublished and published versions of Conley's escape from Confederate captivity. Series II: Research Materials contains correspondence, photocopies, articles, maps, and research files for a history of the 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry that was planned, but never completed, by a previous owner. This series dates from 1980s through the early 2000s.
