<p> Dear J.J.:</p>
<p> I am not as indifferent</p>
<p>as I seem to the fact that you</p>
<p>may have lost a leg! I myself</p>
<p>have been ? having grippe while</p>
<p>your blood poisoning was going on, &</p>
<p>even now, I am as shaky as</p>
<p>you must be. Nonetheless I am</p>
<p>about to depart for Stera Bosa’s</p>
<p>to partake – of what do you</p>
<p>think?—venison! Her hus-</p>
<p>band has shot a deer & offers</p>

<p>my daughter, Babs, & me a share</p>
<p>of the feast! Himself too, but</p>
<p>himself, having started building another</p>
<p>room, refuses to leave “Wycherly”</p>
<p>Babs is the one of my children who</p>
<p>has a husband somewhere on the</p>
<p>high seas in a submarine, so I</p>
<p>am delighted to be taking her to</p>
<p>a party. It is my job now to</p>
<p>keep her so busy she has no time</p>
<p>to think.</p>
<p> The picture came & is back</p>
<p>from the framer but I have not</p>
<p>so much as peeped at it since</p>
<p>I saw it’s prototype at the</p>
<p>museum. Well I know the joy</p>

<p>it will give me in future years</p>
<p>(if any). I feel today</p>
<p>that “future” is a word that has</p>
<p>little reality. If we can get through</p>
<p>the present & suffer what each</p>
<p>day brings, we are lucky. Not</p>
<p>that I’m blue about the outcome,</p>
<p>but the cost of young lives! did</p>
<p>you see the picture in “Life” of</p>
<p>some of the men who died at</p>
<p>Pearl Harbor? I can’t get</p>
<p>them out of my eyes.</p>
<p> If you feel depressed at</p>
<p>Christmas time, call us up &</p>
<p>tell is to meet you at the ferry</p>

The collection includes 27 letters (some with covers and envelopes) written by Mary Sinton Leitch to J. J. Lankes between 1932 and 1950. Introduced by a mutual friend, Leitch and Lankes maintained a more than 18-year correspondence that contained conversations of personal news & friends, the Virginia literary and art scene, and their own writing and artistic efforts (including Lankes collaborations with poet Robert Frost).
The digital collection includes scans of all the correspondence, but does not include the envelopes.
