Home will never be the same for any of us again and my first days there will be hard ones for us all - but just the same I will be counting the days till I can see my loved ones again. Many heartbreaking things have happened to this old world in this past year and I hope that most of it is over. Yes the war in the Pacific does seem to be moving at a rapid pace - the liberation of the Phillipines - the B29 strikes on Japan itself and our carrier strike and now that we are in the process of taking Iwo Jima which is within fighter range of Japan - all of it adds up to enormous amounts of supplies and planning and much sadness at home for it all costs lives of our men. I dread the overconfidence and general letdown, that is bound to result, on the homefront for this war is only begining when we reach China - but when we do get to China where we can get at the Japs in the open it will be the end for Nipon for he won’t stand a chance. Thank you so much for sending me the candy - I will enjoy it so much when it comes - I have been looking for macadima nuts to send you - they are the best things I’ve ever tasted - I remember seeing Lou Chaney and Jackie Coogan in a movie years ago - Lou Chaney <s>we</s> played the part of a kind old Chinaman who gave these Macadima nuts to “the Kid” - guess that the reason I remember it is because it was such a sad picture with the Chinaman floating out on the tide in his houseboat. https://digitalsc.lib.vt.edu/files/original/5f4b49646dae8b7ee8af8c281388e82a.jpg 45d34661e4cfcefcbb92076b2eabf31a PDF Text Text A week from this Sunday I am going on an all day fishing trip with some of our men - I thought it was nice of them to ask me and just hope nothing will happen at the last minute to prevent my going - also I hope that I won’t get sea sick - the trip will remind me of the weekend fishing trip we had at Mr Joe Dickenson’s cabin - but without the chiggers. I hope that by now both of you and Fran are over your colds - I’m glad too that spring is coming to Virginia - its sortta a diferent world when the leaves and flowers start growing - it always gives you an almost new outlook on life - there are no seasons here and I surely miss it.
