Beginning in 2021, graduate students supported by Virginia Tech's Center for Communicating Science interviewed Black professionals engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) research, asking questions about narrators’ research, career paths, advice to younger researchers, joys, frustrations, barriers, and childhood experiences. Interviews were conducted by Virginia Tech graduate students Amber Wendler, Daniel Smith, Korin Jones, Kregg Quarles, and Mika Pagani under the direction of Carrie Kroehler and Patty Raun.</text>

<text>Dr. Ela-Sita Carpenter, born in Baltimore, Maryland, grew up in a small, nature-loving family. Despite living in a cramped rowhouse, her parents fostered her early interest in nature. This passion led her to Hampton University, where she studied biological sciences. After completing her undergraduate studies, she attended Christopher Newport University for her master’s in environmental science, focusing on bat roosting behavior. Despite graduating, she felt unprepared with practical skills, leading her to various technician jobs and environmental education roles. Eventually, she pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri, studying the impact of urban vacant lots on bat communities in Baltimore.

In her professional journey, Dr. Carpenter has made significant contributions as an urban wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Masonville Cove. Her role involves a unique combination of ecological research, community outreach, and education. Dr. Carpenter emphasizes the importance of outreach and communication, striving to make nature accessible and relatable to urban communities. She continues to inspire others by fostering connections between people and nature, particularly in underserved urban areas.</text>
