While I’m so very proud, I can’t say that I’m surprised be- cause I knew that Jimmie would do his part and then more. Winning the Congressional Medal is such an honor and I know that you and Nancy are so proud to know that Jimmie gave his life in such a heroic way. It of course floored me as it must have you and helps a lot to ease the hurt of losing Jimmie - its a wonderful thing to me Mother that he has been given the nation’s highest honor - it can not make me any more proud of him but there has been such a hurt in my heart that we have not heard from the War Dept about the D.S.C. which “Tops” told us he had been awarded - the thought of Jimmie giving such a wonderful and valuable life to an ungrateful goverment has not been a nice thing to think about, several times I’ve started letters to the War Dept to make inquiries but each time I’ve decided to wait a little longer and now I’m glad that I have. https://digitalsc.lib.vt.edu/files/original/9c70b9ebeb84285471561c5de7e3cdbf.jpg 29165e0e4a75f5cbae08f7ed78ac6254 PDF Text Text The long delay is of course explained for it of course takes a special act of congress to award this medal. The presentation will be very hard on you and that is the main reason I would like to be there with you, you will tho make us all even more proud of you. I’m sure that there will be quite a presentation ceremony with the actual presentation made by a very high ranking army officer - please be sure to tell me everything you can possibly remember about it including the afternoon the officer came from Washington. <s> to tell you about it.</s> All this is poorly said for it is hard for me to put into words just what it means to me but I’m sure that you and Nancy understand, this country owed Jimmie a debt and I’m grateful that it has been repaid - the award of this medal in no means makes up for our loss but it eases it a great deal to have Jimmie’s sacrifices so highly honored not only by his family and close friends but by our top most leaders and acknowledged by a grateful nation. Please write me again as soon as you can for I am so anxious to know all the details.
