                    <text>&lt;p&gt;2 May 1945 &lt;br /&gt; Wednesday 2200&lt;br /&gt; Dearest Mother: &lt;br /&gt; Tonight I’d thought that there would &lt;br /&gt; be time enough for me to sit down &lt;br /&gt; and write you a long letter - but as &lt;br /&gt; always something invariably happens so &lt;br /&gt; that there is no time I can ever call&lt;br /&gt; my own - had just gotten back from &lt;br /&gt; chow and was listening to the 6 oclock&lt;br /&gt; news when the outpost called - have &lt;br /&gt; just gotten back and am tired, dirty&lt;br /&gt; and mad - so please forgive a short&lt;br /&gt; letter tonight. &lt;br /&gt; Monday night I had to go &lt;br /&gt; to a farewell party given for Capt. Griffin &lt;br /&gt; (he heads NACTU and is my boss ) - he &lt;br /&gt; is going back to the states on leave after &lt;br /&gt; which he most likely will have command&lt;br /&gt; of one of our large carriers - it was one of those &lt;br /&gt; things I usually try to advoid - however&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                    <text>&lt;p&gt;I couldn’t get out of this one - got back here &lt;br /&gt; around midnight and was greeted by such &lt;br /&gt; a nice long letter from you - I can &lt;br /&gt; well imagine how Jimmies bars, pin and &lt;br /&gt; pocketbook effected you - just knowing &lt;br /&gt; (Frances had told me several days earlier&lt;br /&gt; that they had arrived) that you had &lt;br /&gt; gotten them had an effect on me - I know&lt;br /&gt; how it hurts to get these personal things &lt;br /&gt; that Jimmie had with him on that horrible &lt;br /&gt; day - and yet they are treasures that are &lt;br /&gt; above value to us - and too its means &lt;br /&gt; a lot to me that Jimmie was with such &lt;br /&gt; good friends that would know and understand &lt;br /&gt; that he would want us to have these things. &lt;br /&gt; But the thing that really got close to me &lt;br /&gt; was Cutler’s death for I had hoped and &lt;br /&gt; prayed that he would come through this &lt;br /&gt; war and that we would have an oportunity &lt;br /&gt; to see him after it is all over - also the &lt;br /&gt; fact that he had written us and that we &lt;br /&gt; have never recieved his letter is heart breaking&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                    <text>&lt;p&gt;to me. Do you happen to have either his &lt;br /&gt; Wife’s or his Mother’s address for I would&lt;br /&gt; like to write to them. I would not feel too &lt;br /&gt; badly about his being sent back to his &lt;br /&gt; company after being wounded for it was &lt;br /&gt; probably at his own request - I can well&lt;br /&gt; imagine how he felt. &lt;br /&gt; The renaming of the Amphitheater at &lt;br /&gt; Fort McClellan is such a wonderful tribute&lt;br /&gt; to Jimmie - in many ways it means more &lt;br /&gt; to me than does the medal of honor for it &lt;br /&gt; will be a lasting monument and will &lt;br /&gt; afford much pleasure to G.I.’s far away &lt;br /&gt; from home. I hope that you and Nancy&lt;br /&gt; did go to the dedication this past Sunday&lt;br /&gt; for I feel that it will give you so much &lt;br /&gt; comfort to see and understand what just &lt;br /&gt; plain soldiers think and feel for someone &lt;br /&gt; who gave his life as bravely and unhesitatingly &lt;br /&gt; as Jimmie did. &lt;br /&gt; Must stop now and get to bed - &lt;br /&gt; will write soon again - would like copies of &lt;br /&gt; Tops letters if possible &lt;br /&gt; Love Bob&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                  <text>Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.</text>
