                    <text>&lt;p&gt;August 15, 1943&lt;br /&gt; Dear Mother, &lt;br /&gt; Just a few lines to tell you that &lt;br /&gt; I am well and happy. I guess you and &lt;br /&gt; Nancy will be eating corn on the cob and &lt;br /&gt; just having a fine time down on the &lt;br /&gt; farm with all that good food when you &lt;br /&gt; get this. Well we have been getting some&lt;br /&gt; good fresh food lately so don’t feel too&lt;br /&gt; sorry for me. Corn on the cobb, string&lt;br /&gt; beans, new potatoes, tomatoes, and big. Italian&lt;br /&gt; &lt;s&gt;con&lt;/s&gt; onions (the kind Daddy used to bring from &lt;br /&gt; Washington) have been on our diet lately&lt;br /&gt; and boy have I been having a good time. &lt;br /&gt; This part of the island is much nicer&lt;br /&gt; than the souther and centrail part and for &lt;br /&gt; once we have a nice place to stay. In fact&lt;br /&gt; we are in a house. Mt. Etna is sticking &lt;br /&gt; up in the clowds behind us and as I look at it&lt;br /&gt; I wonder what fate holds in store. &lt;br /&gt; Love&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                  <text>Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.</text>
