1 50 1 https://digitalsc.lib.vt.edu/files/original/2c883072e7f98e2ef1f6fa36ddc96368.jpg f678a9596e1e24d9055a8e35452cb055 PDF Text Text 6 August 1944 Dearest Mother: Yesterday brought the first mail that has reached me here at my new station and its awfully good to have - a nice long letter from Frances and also a letter from Dale Haverstock - they were our next door neighbors in Roanoke Rapids - he’s a sgt in the army on limited duty because of very weak eyes - I think he’s teaching illiterates and is very dissatisfied - he tried to get in all three branches long before he was drafted but none would accept him. They’re very good friends and I hope that we can live somewhere near each other after this is all over. For the past two weeks I’ve been busy gathering together all sorts of gear - since we are attached to CASU for convenience only and since they do not have the supplies we need I have had to get out and look for it - begging, borrowing and when necessary stealing so you may one day be writting to me in Portsmouth. I have run into several fellows that I went to school with - one of them is Jim Brindell who was my co commander while I was being indrotrinated at Dartmouth - of course Bill Thomas is here on the island also - he is from Bedford Va and probably the closest friend I’ve made since being in the Navy other than Bob Rypinski who is in the RMO office in Seattle. Art Cade with whom I lived with for the last several months in N.C. is now with CUB #12 along with 4 other officers from Argus 24 - we were surely split and sent all over the Pacific. I called Bill Thomas early this morning to see if he wanted to take a tour of the island with me today but he has the duty and is unable to leave - we will take the trip later - I have decided to spend the day at some beach and had better get started.
