There is also a coal stove in this building with brick chimney built from the ground; gasoline driven tractor stored in shed adjoining this building and standad gasoline pump is located inside of building with fill pipe outside.

Wharton Baker, engineer. Collection consists of 88 photographs and of buildings, faculty dwellings, barns, and storage lots at Virginia Polytechnic Institute covered by the policy; recommendations for coverage and for fire protection of these buildings; estimated insurable value and insurance carried; and property not insured. Short descriptions of some individual buildings are included. Photographs in the collection have been copied and included in the Historical Photograph Collection of Special Collections.

Wharton Baker, engineer. Collection consists of 88 photographs and of buildings, faculty dwellings, barns, and storage lots at Virginia Polytechnic Institute covered by the policy; recommendations for coverage and for fire protection of these buildings; estimated insurable value and insurance carried; and property not insured. Short descriptions of some individual buildings are included. Photographs in the collection have been copied and included in the Historical Photograph Collection of Special Collections.

This is a one, two, and three story limestone building with fire resistive floors and roof. Roof of two and three sections is concrete tile on steel beams; roof of one story section is sheet rock on steel purlins on steel trusses. Central Steam heat. All interior division walls are cement brick.

This is a fire resistive building having steel frame and brick panel walls; concrete roof on steel trusses. Outside brick stack 180 ft high, which is equipped with lighning rod. There are two 250 horse power and two 350 horse power boilers, coal fired. There is one 780 k.v.a. turbo generator; one 250 k.w. electric generator and one 120 k.w. electric generator, each driven by Steam Engine. This station is primarily used for heating, the turbo generator having ample capacity to take care of all lighting and powerloads.

This building is fire resistive except roof, walls are stone backed with 8" hallow tile; floors are concrete metal lumber construction; roof ordinary wood joist slate convered. Room partitions are 4" gypsum block. There is no basement; central steam heat. Entire building is used for dormitory purposes by non-military students. At the present time, however, only half of the building is occupied.

The Gobble de Art project was sponsored by The Blacksburg Partnership. The purpose of the project was to increase awareness and interest in Blacksburg and also to bring attention to the visual arts. The funds raised from the project will go towards enhancements to Blacksburg that improve the quality of life and add to the current attractiveness of Blacksburg and the surrounding communities as a tourism and retirement destination. This public art project placed seventy-five decorated Hokie Bird statues all around Blacksburg during the Summer and Fall of 2006. The creator of the collection is Carolyn Kletnieks, the artists are listed individually with each item.

The Beverly Willis Architectural Collection spans the years 1954 to 1999 and is comprised primarily of records documenting Willis’s work as an architect in San Francisco between 1960 and 1990. The collection documents the application of computers to architectural design and land analysis, the development of CARLA (Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis) in the 1970s, the history of twentieth-century urban planning, particularly in San Francisco; and the contribution of women to twentieth-century American architecture. Willis, a noted artist, photographer, teacher, and writer, employed the full range of visual arts and design skills to influence and guide architectural projects of major significance.
The bulk of the collection is comprised of Willis and Associates, Inc., (WAI) project files from 1960 to 1990. Projects range from private residences and residential developments to large public institutions, such as the San Francisco Ballet Association Building; and urban development projects, most notably the Yerba Buena Gardens project in downtown San Francisco (unbuilt). Also included are records and design documents for Aliamanu Valley New Town, a military base in Hawaii that was the first major project designed with CARLA, computer software for environmentally-responsive architectural design and feasibility planning created by WAI; and records documenting the development of CARLA.
Project files are comprised of presentation drawings, slope analysis drawings, site plans, maps, cut-and-fill analysis plans, sketches, conceptual design drawings, construction drawings, as well as correspondence, research files, contracts, environmental impact statements and studies, financial records, and feasibility studies. There are records for more than 150 projects. Drawings are large folio, pen-and- ink or watercolor on paper, linen, or mylar. Some are heightened with color.
Also included is a series documenting the development of CARLA, Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis, in the 1970s. Beverly Willis was interested in issues that affected planning, population density, and land-use economics in relation to large-scale development. Along with Eric Tiescholz and Jochen Eigen, she developed a program that enabled architects, with the use of computers, to develop site plans and design techniques in a fraction of the time required by the old methodology. Records documenting the development of CARLA include computer tapes, correspondence, flow charts, memos, and Jochen Eigen's notes on interfacing CARLA with a computer mapping program in 1974.

An account of the resource
The Beverly Willis Architectural Collection spans the years 1954 to 1999 and is comprised primarily of records documenting Willis’s work as an architect in San Francisco between 1960 and 1990. The collection documents the application of computers to architectural design and land analysis, the development of CARLA (Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis) in the 1970s, the history of twentieth-century urban planning, particularly in San Francisco; and the contribution of women to twentieth-century American architecture. Willis, a noted artist, photographer, teacher, and writer, employed the full range of visual arts and design skills to influence and guide architectural projects of major significance.
The bulk of the collection is comprised of Willis and Associates, Inc., (WAI) project files from 1960 to 1990. Projects range from private residences and residential developments to large public institutions, such as the San Francisco Ballet Association Building; and urban development projects, most notably the Yerba Buena Gardens project in downtown San Francisco (unbuilt). Also included are records and design documents for Aliamanu Valley New Town, a military base in Hawaii that was the first major project designed with CARLA, computer software for environmentally-responsive architectural design and feasibility planning created by WAI; and records documenting the development of CARLA.
Project files are comprised of presentation drawings, slope analysis drawings, site plans, maps, cut-and-fill analysis plans, sketches, conceptual design drawings, construction drawings, as well as correspondence, research files, contracts, environmental impact statements and studies, financial records, and feasibility studies. There are records for more than 150 projects. Drawings are large folio, pen-and- ink or watercolor on paper, linen, or mylar. Some are heightened with color.
Also included is a series documenting the development of CARLA, Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis, in the 1970s. Beverly Willis was interested in issues that affected planning, population density, and land-use economics in relation to large-scale development. Along with Eric Tiescholz and Jochen Eigen, she developed a program that enabled architects, with the use of computers, to develop site plans and design techniques in a fraction of the time required by the old methodology. Records documenting the development of CARLA include computer tapes, correspondence, flow charts, memos, and Jochen Eigen's notes on interfacing CARLA with a computer mapping program in 1974.

An account of the resource
The Beverly Willis Architectural Collection spans the years 1954 to 1999 and is comprised primarily of records documenting Willis’s work as an architect in San Francisco between 1960 and 1990. The collection documents the application of computers to architectural design and land analysis, the development of CARLA (Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis) in the 1970s, the history of twentieth-century urban planning, particularly in San Francisco; and the contribution of women to twentieth-century American architecture. Willis, a noted artist, photographer, teacher, and writer, employed the full range of visual arts and design skills to influence and guide architectural projects of major significance.
The bulk of the collection is comprised of Willis and Associates, Inc., (WAI) project files from 1960 to 1990. Projects range from private residences and residential developments to large public institutions, such as the San Francisco Ballet Association Building; and urban development projects, most notably the Yerba Buena Gardens project in downtown San Francisco (unbuilt). Also included are records and design documents for Aliamanu Valley New Town, a military base in Hawaii that was the first major project designed with CARLA, computer software for environmentally-responsive architectural design and feasibility planning created by WAI; and records documenting the development of CARLA.
Project files are comprised of presentation drawings, slope analysis drawings, site plans, maps, cut-and-fill analysis plans, sketches, conceptual design drawings, construction drawings, as well as correspondence, research files, contracts, environmental impact statements and studies, financial records, and feasibility studies. There are records for more than 150 projects. Drawings are large folio, pen-and- ink or watercolor on paper, linen, or mylar. Some are heightened with color.
Also included is a series documenting the development of CARLA, Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis, in the 1970s. Beverly Willis was interested in issues that affected planning, population density, and land-use economics in relation to large-scale development. Along with Eric Tiescholz and Jochen Eigen, she developed a program that enabled architects, with the use of computers, to develop site plans and design techniques in a fraction of the time required by the old methodology. Records documenting the development of CARLA include computer tapes, correspondence, flow charts, memos, and Jochen Eigen's notes on interfacing CARLA with a computer mapping program in 1974.

An account of the resource
The Beverly Willis Architectural Collection spans the years 1954 to 1999 and is comprised primarily of records documenting Willis’s work as an architect in San Francisco between 1960 and 1990. The collection documents the application of computers to architectural design and land analysis, the development of CARLA (Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis) in the 1970s, the history of twentieth-century urban planning, particularly in San Francisco; and the contribution of women to twentieth-century American architecture. Willis, a noted artist, photographer, teacher, and writer, employed the full range of visual arts and design skills to influence and guide architectural projects of major significance.
The bulk of the collection is comprised of Willis and Associates, Inc., (WAI) project files from 1960 to 1990. Projects range from private residences and residential developments to large public institutions, such as the San Francisco Ballet Association Building; and urban development projects, most notably the Yerba Buena Gardens project in downtown San Francisco (unbuilt). Also included are records and design documents for Aliamanu Valley New Town, a military base in Hawaii that was the first major project designed with CARLA, computer software for environmentally-responsive architectural design and feasibility planning created by WAI; and records documenting the development of CARLA.
Project files are comprised of presentation drawings, slope analysis drawings, site plans, maps, cut-and-fill analysis plans, sketches, conceptual design drawings, construction drawings, as well as correspondence, research files, contracts, environmental impact statements and studies, financial records, and feasibility studies. There are records for more than 150 projects. Drawings are large folio, pen-and- ink or watercolor on paper, linen, or mylar. Some are heightened with color.
Also included is a series documenting the development of CARLA, Computerized Approach to Residential Land Analysis, in the 1970s. Beverly Willis was interested in issues that affected planning, population density, and land-use economics in relation to large-scale development. Along with Eric Tiescholz and Jochen Eigen, she developed a program that enabled architects, with the use of computers, to develop site plans and design techniques in a fraction of the time required by the old methodology. Records documenting the development of CARLA include computer tapes, correspondence, flow charts, memos, and Jochen Eigen's notes on interfacing CARLA with a computer mapping program in 1974.

This part of the 125th Anniversary Collection relates to the Board of Visitors (BoV) and includes photographs of Boards and individual rectors, pdfs of text about the history of the Board, and pdfs of several newspaper articles about the Board of Visitors from local newspapers.
This collection includes materials included in an 1997 online exhibit created for the 125th anniversary of the university. The original exhibit was a series of webpages with images, digitized text, maps, newspaper clippings, and more. In the course of migrating the exhibit to a newer platform, digitized items were moved to this collection. In some cases, text-based pages were captured as pdf files and included in this collection.

Insurance Survey of the buildings of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia, prepared in 1931 by Charles Lunsford & Sons, Roanoke, Va.; Insurance Company of North America, Philadelphia, Pa.; and F. Wharton Baker, engineer. Collection consists of 88 photographs and of buildings, faculty dwellings, barns, and storage lots at Virginia Polytechnic Institute covered by the policy; recommendations for coverage and for fire protection of these buildings; estimated insurable value and insurance carried; and property not insured. Short descriptions of some individual buildings are included. Photographs in the collection have been copied and included in the Historical Photograph Collection of Special Collections.

The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

An account of the resource
The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

An account of the resource
This collection contains the photographs of Earl Palmer, an award-winning photographer from Cambria, Virginia, whose work depicted the landscape and traditional culture of rural Appalachia in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Materials date frome 1880 to 1989, but are primarily from the 1940s to the 1970s. The collection is divided among the following series: photographs, duplicate photographs, written materials, oversize photographs, and artifacts.
