                    <text>&lt;p&gt;May 3, 1943&lt;br /&gt; Dear Mother, &lt;br /&gt; If you think it doesn’t &lt;br /&gt; rain in North Africa, you certainly&lt;br /&gt; have the wrong idea. For the&lt;br /&gt; past several days it has been raining&lt;br /&gt; steadly and I have a regular engineering&lt;br /&gt; project outside to drain the water&lt;br /&gt; off. &lt;br /&gt; Since I got here I haven’t had&lt;br /&gt; the chance to visit the rather &lt;br /&gt; large town which is close by but&lt;br /&gt; hope to do so soon. Besides the &lt;br /&gt; arabs there are quiet a few&lt;br /&gt; French there and it is quiet a &lt;br /&gt; place for a fellow to visit. I am&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                    <text>&lt;p&gt;sure you have heard quiet a bit&lt;br /&gt; about it and would enjoy a visit &lt;br /&gt; too. &lt;br /&gt; The other day I saw an old arab&lt;br /&gt; and a soldier trying to make a &lt;br /&gt; deal with the aid of the arabs young&lt;br /&gt; son. The old boy was trying to sell&lt;br /&gt; a knife and at a signal from his&lt;br /&gt; son would slash the air and make&lt;br /&gt; quiet a comotion. The boy would say &lt;br /&gt; German and then the old boy would&lt;br /&gt; stop suddenly and the boy would say&lt;br /&gt; 14 dolar - someone would say six&lt;br /&gt; dollars and the boy would say&lt;br /&gt; damn you and of course the whole&lt;br /&gt; thing would start over. &lt;br /&gt; The paper running out so&lt;br /&gt; Love Jimmie&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                  <text>Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.</text>
