Dearest Maggie,
This morning I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from you. I was so very glad to hear from you that I could hardly wait until the mail to arrived – I got the $5 for which I am very thankfull – I am so very glad to know that you were able to get my Pay for it caused me a great many sleepless nights while I was on Belle Island. I was so fraid that you would suffer as bad as I did – for I knew you had in money except you got my “Pay.” I wish you had of gotin six months Pay instead of four. But I hope you have not been in want for anything – I don’t know when I will get home or if I can get home at all or not – unless the colonel or capt. can do something for me I will have to stay here. This is a fine place but I want to get to home or else to the Regiment. I am quite astonished to hear that Jim Lytte and Chapman have become “Vetrens” What will Lottie say – well I gues Jim has had his furlough and she can put up with it for a while again – give her my best and tell her I am again to get a long furlough and when I get home pins will be played – but I would give a great deal to get home before the Regt. leaves for the field again but I suppose I can’t. I wrote to Col. Shoburn when I came here and asked him to do something for me.

I have no idea what he can do, but I know he will

do all he can – I wrote to you a few days ago and

commenced a long letter and and now I will go

on with it. I think it will interest you – well where did I leave off –––

After we got tents on the Island we were a

little better off. For the frost and rain did not

fall on us – in September it is very cold between

the two streams which run around the Island.

When we first came to this place they were giving

six ounces of bread and 1 ½ ounces “meat” – beef

in the morning and for supper we got four ounces

bread and a pint of bean or rice soup – in my

other letter I told you what kind of soup it was

– soon the bread got to be less. Then the meat

would not come in time and we would have

to do without that day – but would be promised

double rations next which we never got. after

we were there I believe about 10 days the River

got so high that the ferry boat, which brout us

rations, could not run. So we had to go hungry

for about 36 hours – you better believe there was

some good prayers said for the Confederacy

by the hungry prisoners. But it done no good, as I

told you our blankets and extra clothing was taken from us at Staunton. We had nothing

only what we had on, and at night we would

lay down just on the sandy ground about twenty in a tent just like a lot of hogs. – not

as good as some hogpens I have seen – in this

An account of the resource
The collection consists of a single letter from Sgt William S. Tippett to his wife, Maggie. Written from a parole camp in Annapolis, Maryland, the letter opens with Tippett's comments on news from home. A majority of the letter, however, details his stay in Belle Island prison (Richmond) from September 1863 until early March 1864. In particular, he describes the food (or lack of) and the poor conditions.

'Book for Receipts' Recipe Book, 1731 (Ms2008-024)

Description
An account of the resource
The Book for Receipts is a recipe book written in England in 1731. At least two owners added to this work (the names of owners remain unknown) because the handwriting changes in the last third of text. Some recipe contributors are named, such as: Lady Westmorland, Mrs. Catherine Sanderson, Mrs. Allston, Mrs. Gilbert, and Sr. Orlando Gees. Recipes focus largely on delicacies-not on staple meals-and home remedies. Categories of recipes include: pickles and preserves, cakes, biscuits, jellies, creams, and beverages (wines). One noteworthy example of a home remedy entitled The famous American Receipt for the Rheumatism appears in the volume and, according to the author, is very famous in America; a Hundred Pounds have been given for the Receipt. Recipes also indicate the availability of foodstuff in the eighteenth century-as seen through the use of several pounds of good Jamaican Sugar.

Description
An account of the resource
Cooking Recipes is a book filled with hand-written recipes. A hand-painted image of a girl with a duck adorns the cover of "Cooking Recipes." Within the book's pages exist a variety of recipes for soups, salads, puddings, cookies, cakes, icings, and biscuits. A personal note from "Helena" precedes the recipes. In this note, "Helena" thanks the unknown receiver, "Girlie," for participating in her wedding. "Helena" also reinforces the notion that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. No information exists on the recipe book's time period or the geographic location from which it was produced. From the book's appearance, one can surmise that it dates from around the 1930s.
Due to the lack of provided surnames, no biographical information exists on the recipe book's bestower, "Helena," or its receiver, "Girlie."

Title
A name given to the resource
Diary, Richard Colburn, 1861-1863 (Ms2010-010)
Subject
The topic of the resource
Civil War
Description
An account of the resource
The Civil War diary of Richard Colburn, an enlisted soldier of the 12th Infantry of the United States Regular Army attached to the Army of the Potomac. The diary contains entries from December 18, 1861 to February 17, 1863 and details camp life, daily activities, battles, and experience as a prisoner of the Confederate army. It traces Colburn's first days in the army in Iowa and his travel from 14 February 1862 when he left Iowa to his arrival at Fort Hamilton in New York City two days later and his continuing journey to Washington DC. Upon arrival in Washington, Colburn notes that he "put in to help cook." Many of his subsequent entries include brief notations of cooking for the men. Expecting to march to Manassas Junction from Washington, he moved first to Camp California, just outside Alexandria, VA, and from there to Fort Monroe in late March 1862.
The 12th Infantry, marching from Fort Monroe, became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, which lasted into July 1862. Coburn refers to "the hard battle between Yorktown and Richmond" (Battle of Williamsburg) on May 5th and makes reference to Big Bethel and Camp Winfield Scott where he was camped. On Friday 27 June 1862, Coburn was engaged in the Battle of Gaines' Mill and writes, "marched off to the left where we had a heavy battle where Maj. Clitz [Henry Boynton Cliz] myself and several others were wounded and taken prisoner by the 5th regiment Va, with some that was not wounded, many killed." The remainder of the diary describes his time in hospital, both Confederate and Union, his eventual release on 15 January 1863, and his trip home. Colburn's last entry is dated 17 February 1863 when he was in Southington, Ohio visiting his sister on his way, presumably, to Iowa.
