As the son of a college professor and prominent dentist, Walker always wanted to go into medicine as a child while fostering a love for the arts. Walker completed his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College, receiving his BS in computer science. Enjoying the interdisciplinary aspect of the sciences, Walker continued to challenge himself and study multiple areas in STEM. He went on to receive his MS and his PhD from University of Arkansas at Little Rock and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for bioinformatics. Walker's career includes cancer research, chemistry work, and physical chemistry work at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, serving as Interim Chair in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science, mathematics, and bioinformatics. Walker is very invested in increasing the number of Black students in STEM and openly advocates for more diversity in his field. Despite a challenging start to his undergraduate career, he excelled academically at the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he majored in biochemistry and minored in biotechnology. Encouraged by a professor, he pursued a Ph.D., publishing eight peer-reviewed papers and receiving an award for the most outstanding science dissertation at UWI. After completing his Ph.D., he moved to the U.S. for a postdoctoral position at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Auguste is now an assistant professor at Virginia Tech in the Department of Entomology. His research focuses on arbovirology, including viral discovery, vaccine development, and understanding virus-mosquito interactions. He has made significant contributions to vaccine development for viruses like Zika and studies on the impact of insect-only viruses on mosquito-borne disease transmission. Raised in Toronto by a single mother and later her father, Dr. Ware grew up in a challenging environment but found solace and inspiration in academics and nature. Her early life was marked by financial struggles and the complexities of her biracial identity. But despite these obstacles, Dr. Ware excelled in school, eventually attending the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she discovered her passion for entomology. She continued her education at Rutgers University, where she earned her Ph.D. and began her career in academia. Throughout her journey, Dr. Ware has faced numerous challenges, including racism, financial hardship, and balancing motherhood with her academic pursuits. Her determination and resilience led her to secure prestigious fellowships and a tenure-track position at Rutgers, which she eventually achieved. He attended the University of Missouri in St. Louis for his bachelor's degree in biology. Initially aspiring to become a pediatrician, his interest shifted to microbiology during his undergraduate studies. His parents, while supportive in is career paths, were hesitant about his switch into research. Dr. Cox’s undergraduate experience highlighted the lack of diversity in his biology courses, often being the only Black student in advanced classes. He decided to pursue graduate school after gaining research experience at the Danforth Center, leading him to Texas A&M University for his Ph.D. He faced challenges such as balancing family life and studies, managing publishing pressures, and adapting to Texas culture.
