Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

The Blacksburg Odd Fellows lodge was probably formed in December of 1904. It was a branch of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a mutual relief society for people of color.
The Blacksburg, Virginia Odd Fellows Records consist of financial records, correspondence, minute books, brochures of several annual conferences, by-laws and odd issues of the Odd Fellows Journal for the men's lodge. There are also correspondence, minutes and financial records for the women's group - the Household of Ruth.

Dr. Essex Finney in his office in Philadelphia. In 1988, Dr. Finney was appointed to the Federal Senior Executive Service while he was the Associate Director of the North Atlantic Area of ARS, USDA. Later he became Director of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland. In 1992, he was appointed Associate Administrator of ARS. In 1993, he was appointed Acting ARS Administrator. He retired from the USDA in 1995. Essex Finney was one of the first Black students at Virginia Tech.

The College of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University presented Dr. Finney an Outstanding Engineering Alumnus Award in recognition of "his expertise in agricultural research, for his contributions to enhancing the quality of our nation's food and agricultural products, and for his invaluable activity within professional agricultural organizations." Essex Finney was one of the first Black students at Virginia Tech.

The Blacksburg Odd Fellows lodge was probably formed in December of 1904. It was a branch of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a mutual relief society for people of color.
The Blacksburg, Virginia Odd Fellows Records consist of financial records, correspondence, minute books, brochures of several annual conferences, by-laws and odd issues of the Odd Fellows Journal for the men's lodge. There are also correspondence, minutes and financial records for the women's group - the Household of Ruth.

The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

Essex Finney at Graduation Day at VPI, June 1959. Lady on right, Mrs. Janie Hoge, Blacksburg, Virginia. Her husband, William is to the left of Essex Finney. When Essex was admitted to VPI in June 1956, he was advised by the Director of Admissions that: "it has been arranged for you to live with Mrs. William Hoge whose address is 306 E. Clay Street. This is an excellent home and you will be taken care of in the very best way. Mrs. Hoge furnishes room, board, and laundry at the rate of $60 a month." Black students were not permitted to live on campus at that time. Four black students lived with Mrs. Hoge between 1956 to 1959. Essex graduated from VPI with honors in 1959 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. Essex Finney was one of the first Black students at Virginia Tech.

Essex Finney, and staff of the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Dr. Finney joined the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in 1965 as a Research Agricultural Engineer. He worked in the Instrumentation Research Laboratory at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland. Before Finney retired from the ARS in 1995, he had been appointed Acting Administrator of the Agricultural Research Service. In the photo left to right: Essex Finney, Dr. George W. Irving, ARS Administrator; karl H. Norris, Chief of the Instrumentation Research Laboratory; and Talcott W. Edminster, Deputy Administrator of ARS.

Program for the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy 5th Annual Conference, which includes photographs of Henrietta Mann, Nikki Giovannia, and Menah Pratt-Clarke, among others.
This year’s theme was Say (Her, Their, Our) Name and this year's goal was to help women connect with one another, support each other, and leave empowered to continue to succeed in the academy. The program included professional development workshops, networking socials, and mentor development sessions customized for administrators, faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates. The conference honored the legacy of the late Zenobia Lawrence Hikes, VT Vice President for Student Affairs 2005 - 2008, commemorating her by giving the first Faculty Women of Color in the Academy award in her name.

The Blacksburg Odd Fellows lodge was probably formed in December of 1904. It was a branch of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a mutual relief society for people of color.
The Blacksburg, Virginia Odd Fellows Records consist of financial records, correspondence, minute books, brochures of several annual conferences, by-laws and odd issues of the Odd Fellows Journal for the men's lodge. There are also correspondence, minutes and financial records for the women's group - the Household of Ruth.

An account of the resource
The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.
