An account of the resource
The photograph collection at Special Collections consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. Subjects include, but are not limited to: athletics, the Corps of Cadets, campus views and buildings, events and celebrations, Agricultural Extension sites/work, and candid images of students and campus groups. A alphabetically organized photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic sites and buildings, Blacksburg views and buildings, scenes from surrounding towns/cities/counties, agriculture activities, and candid images of people.

This collection contains the papers of Hermann C. Niemeyer, a student at Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) during the mid-1870s. The collection includes two leaves detailing Niemeyer's expenses while at school in 1876 and 1877, and three leaves containing well-wishes from schoolmates and genealogical data on the Niemeyer family. The collection also includes a certificate, signed by Charles L. C. Minor, commending Niemeyer for "attaining to an average of three-fourths in all his examinations for the session of 1875-76," and a photographic portrait of Niemeyer in his cadet uniform.

An account of the resource
Reverend Dr. Ellison Adger Smyth was born and raised in Blacksburg, Virginia. He attended Blacksburg schools, and he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1925 with a degree in electrical engineering before answering the call to ministry. Rev. Smyth served churches in Canada, West Virginia, Virginia, and South Carolina before returning to Blacksburg in 1948. In this interview, Rev. Smyth describes growing up in Blacksburg as a son to VPI faculty, and he describes race relations in the area from a white perspective. Smyth discusses his desegregation efforts in the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, and he describes his experience with the Ministerial Association and Blacksburg Human Relations Council, which were organizations that advocated to end segregation in churches and schools.

This part of the 125th Anniversary Collection relates to the Board of Visitors (BoV) and includes photographs of Boards and individual rectors, pdfs of text about the history of the Board, and pdfs of several newspaper articles about the Board of Visitors from local newspapers.
This collection includes materials included in an 1997 online exhibit created for the 125th anniversary of the university. The original exhibit was a series of webpages with images, digitized text, maps, newspaper clippings, and more. In the course of migrating the exhibit to a newer platform, digitized items were moved to this collection. In some cases, text-based pages were captured as pdf files and included in this collection.

The Board of Visitors of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute who on Tuesday, June 27, assumed the administrative control of the Radford College which under the acts of its consolidation with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute became the Woman's Division of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Furr, Roanoke; Samuel D. Preston, Winchester; Oscar H. Smith III, Norfolk; Charles H. Reed, Chesterfield; Granville M. Read, Forest; W. H. Burruss, Lynchburg; Vernon G. Eberwine, Suffolk. Eberwine was re-elected rector at the meeting. Elected to the executive committee with Eberwine were Furr, Moffett, Mrs. McConnell and Reed. Paul Mellon of Upperville and Dowell J. This collection includes materials included in an 1997 online exhibit created for the 125th anniversary of the university. The original exhibit was a series of webpages with images, digitized text, maps, newspaper clippings, and more. In the course of migrating the exhibit to a newer platform, digitized items were moved to this collection. In some cases, text-based pages were captured as pdf files and included in this collection.

This part of the 125th Anniversary Collection relates to the Board of Visitors (BoV) and includes photographs of Boards and individual rectors, pdfs of text about the history of the Board, and pdfs of several newspaper articles about the Board of Visitors from local newspapers.
This collection includes materials included in an 1997 online exhibit created for the 125th anniversary of the university. The original exhibit was a series of webpages with images, digitized text, maps, newspaper clippings, and more. In the course of migrating the exhibit to a newer platform, digitized items were moved to this collection. In some cases, text-based pages were captured as pdf files and included in this collection.
