In one of your &lt;br /&gt; recent letters you asked me about &lt;br /&gt; the nuts in my Thanksgiving &lt;br /&gt; box. They were swell, - Two boxes&lt;br /&gt; of them. &lt;br /&gt; Well the other day when we &lt;br /&gt; were on the Browning automatic&lt;br /&gt; rifle range, the Captain asked&lt;br /&gt; me if I would liked to stay at &lt;br /&gt; Camp Croft. Naturally I told him&lt;br /&gt; yes. He told me to consider&lt;br /&gt; myself a member of the cadry.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                    <text>&lt;p&gt;Otey too but to date the captain &lt;br /&gt; has said nothing to him. &lt;br /&gt; Today Carlton told me that &lt;br /&gt; this bunch would be shipped&lt;br /&gt; before December 18 and that no &lt;br /&gt; new boys would come in till &lt;br /&gt; January 15 so I may get home &lt;br /&gt; sometime around xmas after all. &lt;br /&gt; I am not well posted on &lt;br /&gt; current events but the news has &lt;br /&gt; looked better lately hasn't it. &lt;br /&gt; Seemed as though the people&lt;br /&gt; have at last come to them&lt;br /&gt; silences and that some of &lt;br /&gt; these strikes will be stopped. Before I was&lt;br /&gt; drafted, I &lt;s&gt;head&lt;/s&gt; heard tales of &lt;br /&gt; bad moral in the army. I&lt;/p&gt;</text>

He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.</text>
