An account of the resource
The Harry Downing Temple, Jr., Papers contains materials related to Temple's personal life, interest in heraldry and insignia, and his research and publications on the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Materials date from about 1872 to 2004.
The majority of the collection is comprised of research for The Bugle's Echo, including handwritten manuscripts, drafts, copies of research material, and extensive collection of photographs. Most of the research materials are photocopies from the Bugle, Techgram, and the Collegiate Times. As part of his research on Virginia Tech, Col. Temple collected a few original letters and memorabilia from other cadets. This collection houses a few of these letters and reminisces from the early years of Virginia Tech's history.
The other materials in the collection stem largely from Colonel. Temple's interest in the military and heraldry. The collection contains materials ranging from battle maps of Europe from the Napoleonic Wars to World War II, to heraldric drawings made by Temple or audio recordings of lectures he attended. Also included are various publications about heraldry and the military that Temple accumulated over his lifetime.

Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.

The collection consists of 218 letters, military orders, notes, certificates of military appointments, and other items, collected or created by Preston between 1849 and 1871, with the majority from the period between May 1861 and December 1862. The materials include several military orders signed by such members of the Confederate Army as Jubal Early, John B. Floyd, and George E. Pickett, as well as orders written by Preston himself. Also included is a manuscript draft of a broadside written by Preston from Solitude on May 13, 1863, as a call to arms to the men of Roanoke and Montgomery County to repel the Union Army which was in the immediate vicinity; and a pardon signed by President Andrew Jackson on September 10, 1865, granting Preston amnesty for his offenses committed in the recent rebellion.
Robert Taylor Preston was born at Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1809 to James Patton and Nancy Ann Taylor Preston. He was a student at Hampden-Sydney College from 1825 to 1828. He qualified as a captain of the 75th Regiment of the (Virginia?) Militia in 1830 and was commissioned as Justice of the Peace of Montgomery County in 1837. In 1833, he married Mary Hart (1802-1882) and they had three children: Virginia Ann Emily (1834-1898), Benjamin Hart (1836-1851), and James Patton (1838-1901). Robert Taylor Preston built his residence "Solitude" in the early 1830s. At the start of the Civil War he was appointed a colonel of the volunteers in the Provisional Army of Virginia. In July 1861, he was appointed a colonel of the 28th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America, where he served until the infantry's reorganization in April 1862. Beginning in August 1864 he served as a lieutenant colonel and then a colonel of the 4th Virginia Reserves, and surrendered with the troops of General J. E. Johnston in North Carolina in April 1865. In 1872, he sold the land to the state to establish the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College on the condition he and his wife could live in the house until their deaths. Robert Taylor Preston died in 1881. Mary Preston died in 1881.

This Fenwick Civil War Materials Collection is a small collection of American Civil War-related materials, containing the correspondence of John Newton Smith, a private in Company I, 13th Virginia Cavalry and the sketchbook of Charles Gulager, a private in Company A, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The materials were collected by Fenwick family members.

An account of the resource
The James W.M. Harris Papers consist of over 200 letters written either from or to Harris or immediate members of his family between 1857 and 1909. The majority of the letters are from James to his wife Mary, written almost entirely during the Civil War. These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. Other letters are from Mary to her husband relating day to day happenings, from various family members to other family, several letters from Harris to his daughters, a lengthy letter from Harris's mother describing conditions in Mississippi during the war, and finally condolence letters to James on the death of his wife.

An account of the resource
The James W.M. Harris Papers consist of over 200 letters written either from or to Harris or immediate members of his family between 1857 and 1909. The majority of the letters are from James to his wife Mary, written almost entirely during the Civil War. These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. Other letters are from Mary to her husband relating day to day happenings, from various family members to other family, several letters from Harris to his daughters, a lengthy letter from Harris's mother describing conditions in Mississippi during the war, and finally condolence letters to James on the death of his wife.

The papers consist of correspondence among the family members, particularly between Hugh and Adelaide Nelson of Long Branch Plantation in Millwood and their daughter Nannie, as well as the Civil War letters between prisoner of war G. Washington "Wash" Nelson and Mollie Scollay of Shepardstown, Virginia.
G. Washington Nelson was captured in 1863 and held at Johnson's Island, Ohio, Point Lookout, Maryland, and Fort Delaware, Delaware. Civil War papers also include muster rolls, one of them signed by J.E.B. Stuart, of Captain Hugh Nelson's company, the Clarke County, Company D., Sixth Cavalry Volunteers.

An account of the resource
The collection consists of fourteen letters, dating from September 8, 1861, to February 15, 1863, from Candler to his uncle Charles [probably maternal uncle Charles Henry Wheelwright] and his brother, John W. Candler of Boston.
The letters are articulate and descriptive, replete with Candler's strong opinions about the state of the Union, the abilities of the generals (Union and Confederate) who were running the war and the politicians who were running the country, and his own ambitions for advancing in rank and status in the army. On May 10, 1862, he writes from Williamsburg, Virginia, about the engagement with the Confederates and their sharpshooters. His June 24, 1962, letters from Fair Oaks, Virginia, and his July 7, 1862 letter from Harrison's Bar, Virginia, describe his units participation in the Battle of Mechanicsville, which was part of the Seven Days Campaign.
Candler's November 6, 1862, letter, written from Washington, D.C., has much about General George McClellan's political troubles, written soon before McClennan was removed from command of the Army of the Potomac and replaced by Ambrose E. Burnside. His December 21, 1862, letter disparagingly comments on the Union army's performance at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13.
Candler interspersed the letters with his concerns about the well-being of his fiance, and later, wife, Fannie, and his fear that his brother John will join the army and leave no one to care for their mother or John's children. Candler often asks his brother, a businessman in Boston, to send money.

An account of the resource
The collection consists of items from the early 1800s pertaining to the business dealings of Samuel Huff of Montgomery (now Floyd) County. Materials include promissory notes, fines for Huff's failure to attend muster of the 75th Regiment of the Virginia Militia, and an indenture for land. The collection also consists of six letters written by Lorenzo Dow Hylton to his wife Barbara while he served in Company D of the 54th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War, and one letter to him from Barbara. Included in the collection are letters from Barbara's cousin, Samuel Slusher, and brother-in-law, Ira Hylton, about Lorenzo Hylton's death in a Confederate hospital in Marietta, Georgia, and letters from Martha Huff of Indiana, to Barbara. Genealogical information about the Hylton family, compiled by a descendant of the family, is also a part of the collection.

This collection consists of papers from the Nelson family of Clarke County, Virginia. The papers consist of correspondence among the family members, particularly between Hugh and Adelaide Nelson of Long Branch Plantation in Millwood and their daughter Nannie, as well as the Civil War letters between prisoner of war G. Washington "Wash" Nelson and Mollie Scollay of Shepardstown, Virginia.
G. Washington Nelson was captured in 1863 and held at Johnson's Island, Ohio, Point Lookout, Maryland, and Fort Delaware, Delaware. Civil War papers also include muster rolls, one of them signed by J.E.B. Stuart, of Captain Hugh Nelson's company, the Clarke County, Company D., Sixth Cavalry Volunteers.

An account of the resource
Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.

The James W.M. Harris Papers consist of over 200 letters written either from or to Harris or immediate members of his family between 1857 and 1909. The majority of the letters are from James to his wife Mary, written almost entirely during the Civil War. These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. Other letters are from Mary to her husband relating day to day happenings, from various family members to other family, several letters from Harris to his daughters, a lengthy letter from Harris's mother describing conditions in Mississippi during the war, and finally condolence letters to James on the death of his wife.

These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. Other letters are from Mary to her husband relating day to day happenings, from various family members to other family, several letters from Harris to his daughters, a lengthy letter from Harris's mother describing conditions in Mississippi during the war, and finally condolence letters to James on the death of his wife.

An account of the resource
Union soldier during the Civil War, writing from Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 20, 1864, to his daughter, about the many battles he had fought in and the presence of the Confederates in the immediate area. Bauer was a native German speaker and the English in his letter is heavily Germanized (ex. shuding duks for shooting ducks). Bauer was killed two months later in the Battle of Monocacy. Transcript available. Collection also includes a daguerreotype of an identified man.

One of one hundred electrotype replica copies made from the original Great Seal of the Confederate States of America in the early 1870s. Of the hundred, 75 were made of copper and 25, as is the case with this example, are silver over copper. The original seal was produced for the CSA in 1864 by J. A. and A. B. Wyon, London, Chief Engravers of Seals for the British Monarchy. Accompanying the seal is a letter of authentication from Wyon dated 6 March 1874, verifying the authenticity of the impression as a faithful reproduction of the original. The Seal is held in its original gutta percha box.
