Steger, My name is Whitney Olsen, I am a 20 year old college student attending Utah Valley State College. I know that this is not the first letter you have received with messages relating towards your school and the atrocity that happened in April and that you probably still receive many a day but I hope you will take the time to read mine. In April 2007 I was attending Utah State University. It was a cold morning and I was watching the news eating a bowl of cereal when I first heard that there had been a shooting at your school. I watched in silence as the broad casters spoke. I could not believe it. I went to my classes that day un able to take my thoughts way from what had happened. Over the next few days I read countless articles on it, watched the news and talked to my friends about it. Even though I live thousands of miles away I was very very struck by what had happened. I wanted to help. I wanted to some how let your students know that even though I did not know them and they did not know me, it did not matter. I was a fellow university student and my heart reached out to them in their time of need. Enclosed with this letter you will find my C.D. I am a singer/song writer and I knew I had to write a song for your school and some how get it there after I heard what had happened. Thanks to the wonderful opportunity I had to fly to Orlando, Florida and perform in front of an audience of 5,000 I was able to record some songs including the one dedicated to Virginia Tech. It has always been my hope and wish that some how I would get to share it with the students of your school. My heart was touched by the many people who walked up to me after I sang it in Florida, sharing with me their connections to your school. Some said they would show the song to the kids who attended there. I hope they get to hear it, but I thought that by sending a copy to you, you could some how help me in getting it into the hands of your students. The song is titled "Our Prayer". I have many copies of the CD if you are interested in helping me spread this song to your students. It was the only gift I could offer being so far away but I hope the words will touch your heart. I work as a wood worker, and mechanic in Montana. To express our love, grief and prayers for your loss, I wrote this song I hope might be of comfort. Yesterday I sang it at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Bozeman, Montana and the congregation sang the chorus. It was heart felt as we sent our prayers. From the UAB Gospel Choir When 32 students lost their lives on April 16, 2007 during a tragic shooting incident on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, institutions of higher learning shared in the grief with friends, families, faculty and students. The shock and horror of this event included the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Gospel Choir, who immediately sent signed cards and condolences to Virginia Tech. It moved Kevin Turner, director of the UAB Gospel Choir, to compose and dedicate a song to everyone that was affected by this awful occurrence, as well as similar incidences that has happened on other college campuses that will be remembered for many generations to come as well. UAB Football Quarterback Sam Hunt sings lead vocal on the enclosed song entitled, "Nothing Goes Unnoticed," He agreed to sing lead vocal to demonstrate the school spirit that reaches from the campus of UAB to campus (and hearts) of Virginia Tech. More than 125 voices took to the stage to record this song, and a capacity crowd of 1200+ people filled the Jemison Concert Hall at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on the campus of UAB. On the evening of this recording, UAB Blazers exchanged their green and gold school colors for maroon and orange and the crowd waved maroon and orange glow sticks, while 32 candles glowed on center stage in honor of the fallen students. This composition is sent to the families of the 32 victims, to the Virginia Tech Office of Recovery and Support and to the president of the university with as much love and concern as we can include in this song and in this letter. The song is going to radio stations in Virginia and to the university in time for the memorial services. I would appreciate it if you could get it around to wherever it would most likely be played, as I believe the message is important, about gun control, and how vital our children are to us: too vital to leave guns around to kill them, or wars to take them. The song is going to radio stations in Virginia and to the university in time for the memorial services. I would appreciate it if you could get it around to wherever it would most likely be played, as I believe the message is important, about gun control, and how vital our children are to us: too vital to leave guns around to kill them, or wars to take them. We have included a copy of our song on CD and a printout of the lyrics for your review. (BEST ENJOYED LOUD) We would like you to place this song somewhere on the VA TECH Memorial website. We played around with the tune for over a year but couldn't find the right words for the song. We knew we wanted it to be called "Dream Flying" and wanted the overall theme to be related to the title, but for some reason, the words were not forthcoming. Since I had been a student at VA Tech and Lewis' brothers were graduates, we both had a very real connection to Blacksburg and had spent a lot of time there. When we heard about the shootings, it seemed to be a catalyst for the words of the song to come together. We think of it as a song of hope that was inspired by a tragic event at a place that we both love. We don't explicitly reference any particular event, but feel that our song captures a "feeling" that we both shared after this terrible tragedy. It is short, about 40 minutes. This was the first time in our history (I have been here 40 years) that an entire Berklee Performance Center audience left an event in complete silence. Amazing. I am a high school senior in Elyria, Ohio. On Monday I heard about the tragic events that occurred at your college. I did not know what to say after hearing this because I am currently the lead character in a play about school violence. I actually play the character who has killed five of his classmates and his parents, so when I heard about this on the news, I felt so many different things that I wasn't even sure that I wanted to do the play any more. It gave me a new outlook on my character and honestly scared me a lot. The irony of the whole situation was/is a little overwhelming to me. First I would just like to say that you have my every condolence and I do hope that everything will be ok for everyone who was a victim and for everyone else who were not direct victims but are still victims in the end of Monday's events. It's strange because for some reason I keep feeling the need to say that I am sorry even though I know that I never did anything and never would do anything of this nature. Maybe it's just the character from my play talking. Maybe I feel that because I'm portraying a teen who has a lot of problems and makes bad decisions, that I am somehow related to what happened even though I know that I am not. I do not honestly know. In addition to acting, I also write music. After Monday I felt that I needed to write a song for all of you. I wrote it and recorded it in my room. The recording doesn't sound professional because I don't have good software for recording things and the mic that I use is not very good. I was not able to find a professional to record me. I did my best however to make the song sound good and I really hope that you like it. The song is called Yesterday. The song is dedicated to everyone at Virginia Tech and everyone somehow connected to Virginia Tech. I hope you like it. Also, I want you to know that I am not sending you this for my own recognition or personal gain. I wrote the enclosed song because I feel like the words convey the feelings of many. Its been said the music is the universal language. It can be used for many purposes; to laugh, to cry, to ponder, and so on. Songs can help others speak, even though they didn't write the words. That's why songs can never be truly owned. Sure, they can be copyrighted, stamped with a name, or attributed to an artist, but songs that people relate to are owned by the people they help. I am a senior at Lee County High School in Beattyville, Kentucky. First let me extend my condolences to your school, staff, students, and the families of the victims of the events of April 16, 2007. Also, I want you to know that I am not sending you this for my own recognition or personal gain. I wrote the enclosed song because I feel like the words convey the feelings of many. Its been said the music is the universal language. It can be used for many purposes; to laugh, to cry, to ponder, and so on. Songs can help others speak, even though they didn't write the words. I'm Nicole Aguilar, a film major at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I am from New Jersey and have many friends that attend VT. A few hours after the students at my college heard the news of the tragedy at your university, we were all trying to think of a way to reach out and support your community. My friend Dustin and I were sitting on the couch that evening and came up with the idea of making you all a commemoration video. We felt, as art students, this might bring more hope and pride to you all than an excessive amount of flowers and cards. So, we got a crew together and made you, what I think, is something that will help you keep the Hokie spirit your loved ones had, alive. Rather than dwell on what you lost, reflect on what you have... Hokie spirit and massive support from the nation. Our entire SCAD community truly admires the strength and pride you have all had through this rough time. This project was put together for you all to see what an amazing institution your loved ones were and are still a part of. Dustin and I realize that nothing will be able to fill the void of what you lost, but we do hope this brings a little joy to your troublesome times. Being a film student at the Savannah College of Art and Design and having a brother that attends Virginia Tech and several friends as well, I was shocked and horrified when I first heard of the unimaginable event that befell Tech's campus a couple weeks ago. Immediately my friend Nicole and I were trying to think of the most appropriate way for us to send our condolences and thoughts to our friends and loved ones at Virginia Tech. Since we attend an art college, we both felt it would be most special to display the talent of our student body by creating a commemorative video showcasing Tech's achievements, traditions, values, and pride which is what Virginia Tech is credited for nationwide. The goal in mind was to praise the colleges' best attributes and to help rebuild that strong and powerful Hokie spirit that is respected and admired by the students at SCAD. We wanted to give words of encouragement through personal interviews from SCAD students and give a sense of hope during these days of sadness and loss. But remember just as people are remembering all around the world, you are the HOKIES, you will prevail, you will get through this. You have the support and prayers of the students, faculty, and staff of the SCAD community. So as you watch this small token of our condolences, keep in mind that Virginia Tech and the Hokie nation is truly an inspiration to us all and we hold you deep in our hearts and prayers. So much so, one of our band members and fellow songwriter's had to react to this. We wanted to write a song that did justice to what had happened but in a way as to show hope for a better day. Please listen to the CD sample, look at the artwork and lyrics. Visit our website to read the whole story as to how Mike Clapper wrote the lyrics to this. We had already written a song for our troops but had not recorded it. We went ahead and recorded both songs on Friday May 11th. I hope these songs will pay tribute to both the students that are gone and the students and everyone else that have survived. We will gladly collect and forward proceeds from any sales of this CD to the fund that you have established. This CD is not yet released in hard copy but the digital songs are released on internet radio stations We are just a local band called KUN-TAJUS (contagious) from Bedford, Pa and have been playing for 43 years (we're almost as old as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones so we all have children of college age) We have other songs that we have written and recorded, plus other finished songs that are not yet recorded. We are 5 hrs. North of Blacksburg so maybe someday we could come down and play a concert for the students. This song, written by me, and performed by The Fabulous Dialtones, is dedicated to the memory of the victims of last year's campus tragedy of April 16, 2007. We have been hard at work recording and polishing this over the last several weeks in hopes of delivering it to you in time for use during the Expressions of Remembrance on April 16, 2008. I am pleased to have learned that you were impressed by the rough mix I sent last week, and believe you will find this version much improved. Our plans include releasing a press release on 4/14 to selected DC area media and reporters, as well as a wire release that should get additional coverage. Also, an email will go out to our band distribution list. Both messages will refer readers to our web site to hear the song and will encourage people to click on the Hokie Spirit Foundation web site to make donations. We feel the email will be particularly effective as we will urge our recipients to forward the message to their own networks of friends and associates, particularly those with affiliations to Virginia Tech. We are contemplating the sale of CDs of the song at future band performances, with a share of the proceeds to be forwarded to the foundation fund, and a smaller share held in an effort to recoup some of our production costs. Should the band or I (in some other capacity) include "33 Gone" in any future CD that includes other songs, I hope to be able to continue to apportion a share of the proceeds of that project to Virginia Tech.
