Description
An account of the resource
The Mary Josephine Hartwick VPI Memorabilia and Scrapbook contains a scrapbook filled with photos of the VPI campus as well as inlaid tickets to both on and off campus events in the mid 1920s. The photos feature the scrapbook creator, Mary Josephine Hartwick, along with her friends during her tenure at VPI. The time in which Hartwick attended VPI was a trying one for women. One of the first female students at VPI, she endured having water thrown at her by cadets and was forbidden from being in the school yearbook. Included in the collection are a VPI tie tack and belt buckle, a track medal for shot put, and a plaque that reads "Founding Members." In addition to the scrapbook, there are many loose photographs stored in the collection.

Description
An account of the resource
<p>A scrapbook of poetry, newspaper clippings and pressed flowers from the 1860s, likely created by Virginia Bedinger Lucas, younger sister of Daniel Bedinger Lucas. Virginia was born December 16, 1837 and died April 27, 1867. Daniel was born March 16, 1836 and died June 24, 1909. Both were born, at Rion Hall near Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia). The two siblings shared a love and talent for poetry. Though never published during her short lifetime, several of Virginia's poems were published in Daniel's 1869 volume, <em>The Wreath of Eglantine, and Other Poems</em>.<br /><br /><br /></p>
<p>The bulk of the material in the collection of which this scrapbook is a part was either created by or relates to Daniel Bedinger Lucas. He attended the University of Virginia, and then studied law under Judge John W. Brockenbrough of Lexington, Virginia. In 1859 he began practicing law at Charles Town but moved the next year to Richmond. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 he joined the staff of General Henry A. Wise and took part in the Kanawha Valley campaign, but his physical disability from a childhood spine injury kept him from active service in the last years of the war. Toward the end of the war he ran the blockade to defend his friend John Yates Beall, accused of being a Confederate spy, but was unable to defend him against the charges. Beall was executed on Governors Island, New York. In 1869, Lucas married Evalina (Lena) Tucker Brooke, of Richmond. Their only child, Virginia, was born in 1873. Barred from the practice of law until 1871, due to restrictions on the service of ex-Confederates, Lucas turned to literature and became co-editor of the Baltimore Southern Metropolis. Many of his poems were published in this magazine. He reentered the practice of law in 1871 and took a prominent role in the Democratic party politics of West Virginia, acting as Democratic elector in the elections of 1872 and 1876, to the legislature in 1884 and 1886, and as a member of the supreme court of appeals from 1889 to 1893. Lucas's volumes of poetry include <em>The Wreath of Eglantine</em> (1869) and <em>Ballads and Madrigals</em> (1884). He wrote three plays about the Civil War. His books include <em>The Memoir of John Yates Beall</em> (1865) and <em>Nicaragua, War of the Filibusters</em> (1896). He was known as the "poet of the Shenandoah Valley."</p>

Thoughts When Dr. King Died
The way I feel today
... is lost
I feel a faint beat of hope,
but is there a way?
What will be the cost? A man dies another is born. The cycle goes on. Why take away something that we cannot replace? Take my body, hurt it, the pain ceases after awhile; though death is sometimes the final release. But don't tear down my heart, don't make me hate the sight of my fellow man. Don't take my dignity and trust in mankind. If you do we are both lost.
I need somebody to talk to, somebody that will not say you have to be strong now, I'm not. You can't help me can you? - You believe you know how I feel?

Transcript
A verbatim typewritten copy of the textual contents of a document.
Note in margin: This part written the next day after flag raising at Burruss.
This morning when the flag was raised to its highest level--gloom surrounded my being. The march--step--step--step of the uniformed men--the systematic order of it all. You 3, you had your orders to follow, but how did your hearts feel? Did you realize that I could not look up with pride when the flag was blowing so powerfully in the early crisp air. Maybe you did, but you told yourself well it has to be. The U.S. flag was torn at the ends, the tears started climbing and winding their ways through that symbol of the country that I am a native of. Will there soon be nothing left but strips of cloth floating individually about the flag pole? Some bits will no doubt lose strength all together and drift off into the air and never return. No, this will not happen, we will buy a new flag and everything will be O.K.; I can smile and be happy looking at the stars and stripes forever. But I can't smile and be happy with my fellowman because people just want to exchange hate and past mistakes for something better. The society tears apart - floating about in individual strips, it eventually loses strength and bits of it drift off into the air and never return.
