In this fourth and final interview with Dr. Karen DePauw, Karen highlights some of her personal achievements and improvements made on behalf of the school. She also discusses some troubling and emotional moments in Virginia Tech’s past, such as April 16th and the murder in the Graduate Life Center.
Recognizing the lack of recognition for exemplary graduate students, Karen created an achievement titled “Graduate Students of Distinction”, made to award and acknowledge students for their accomplishments. She also discusses the alumni presence in the GLC and sense of community cultivated by the graduate school.
As an administrator, Karen played an important role in the events of April 16th and the aftermath. She helped to work with the families of the victims in bringing them comfort and closure during a very difficult time. The community was very damaged and troubled in the aftermath of this tragedy and Karen discusses some of the steps that individuals took to aid in their healing process.
Shortly after April 16th, Virginia Tech was facing another tragedy: A graduate student was murdered in the GLC. As the Dean of Graduate Studies at the time, Karen found herself very involved in the effects of this event. Her empathy and leadership in the face of these two terrible events allowed Virginia Tech to heal and come together as a community.
Karen DePauw has been an invaluable member of the Virginia Tech community. Her contributions to the graduate program and her devotion to inclusion and diversity have transformed the campus into the welcoming location it is known as today.
