Dr. Karl Walker was born and raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. As the son of a college professor and prominent dentist, Walker always wanted to go into medicine as a child while fostering a love for the arts. Walker completed his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College, receiving his BS in computer science. Enjoying the interdisciplinary aspect of the sciences, Walker continued to challenge himself and study multiple areas in STEM. He went on to receive his MS and his PhD from University of Arkansas at Little Rock and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for bioinformatics.
Walker's career includes cancer research, chemistry work, and physical chemistry work at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, serving as Interim Chair in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science, mathematics, and bioinformatics. Walker is very invested in increasing the number of Black students in STEM and openly advocates for more diversity in his field.
