The Legal Life of the Mill
These documents show the transfer of land ownership in Fries over the lifetime of the mill, from initial acquisition to eventual sell-off. For the majority of its functional life, the mill owned much of the housing and business property in town, leasing buildings out to tenants. However, as time wore on, the mill decided to start selling the houses to the employees who lived in them. This marked a further step back from involvement in every aspect of the mill workers' lives.
The Virginia Department of Highways required rights to a small strip of land, owned by the mill, in order to create a maintenance road for Highway 94. These records document the transfer of rights to that land from the mill to the state.
