Memoir 1, Page 59, The Capture of Jeff Davis
"On the 10th of May 1865 the skulking traitor was overtaken by Col. Prichard and conveyed to Ft. Monroe."
Following the surrender of Richmond on April 1, 1865, the Confederate government was moved first to Danville, Virginia, and then further south to Washington, Georgia. On May 10, Davis was found by Colonel Benjamin D. Pritchard and the 4th Michigan and 1st Wisconsin Cavalries. Following his capture, Davis was taken to Fort (then Fortress) Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, a Union stronghold along the James River. He was held in a cell at Fort Monroe, enduring poor treatment and illness, for more than two years.
