Day by Day Journal, Page 49, Battle of Belmont

"Battle Belmont Confed.' [Rld?].—95 missing + wound. 488."

The Battle of Belmont occurred on November 7, 1861 when US General Ulysses Grant attacked a Confederate camp in Missouri. Grant called the battle a Union victory, even though the Union troops were repulsed following the arrival of Confederate reinforcements. Regardless of the lack of obvious gains for the Union, the move defined Grant as a determined and bold general, traits that would later lead to his promotion to head of the US Army. The casualty rates that Woods records here are fairly accurate to modern figures for the battle, with 105 Confederate deaths, 536 Confederate wounded or captured, 120 Union dead, and 487 Union lost.
