Day by Day Journal, Page 20, Robert Anderson
"Maj. Anderson at Phila."
Robert Anderson (1805-1871) was the Union commander of Fort Sumter during the battle. He was celebrated in the North for moving his troops from Fort Moultrie, another fort in Charleston’s harbor, to the more defensible Fort Sumter as an act of defiance against secession. Following the fall of the fort, he traveled north, stopping in Philadelphia, where he received a sword for his heroic actions in defending the fort.
