Memoir 1, Page 82, Confederate Loyalties

"Foote, Henry and Ewing, were in the rebel congress—Hatton was a General in the rebel army, and the Hon. RL Caruthers consented to be elected governor of Tennessee."

While little evidence of Gustavus A. Henry’s Unionist loyalties have been found, the other four men did serve in the Confederate cause despite initial opposition to secession. While it is difficult to fully understand motivations for this switch, it is clear that Robert L. Caruthers, Robert H. Hatton, and Andrew Ewing were swayed toward secession following the Battle of Fort Sumter and Lincoln’s call for volunteers. Regardless of his motivation for joining the Confederate Congress, Henry S. Foote gave half-hearted support to the cause, trying to return to the Union twice during the war.
