"Battle near Springfield Mo."
This is the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, which took place August 10, 1861, and was the first large battle of the Trans-Mississippi theater of the war. Battle broke out as Confederate forces and the Missouri State Guard faced off against Union forces for control of the state. While Missouri remained a part of the Union throughout the war, this battle gave Confederates control of southwestern Missouri and encouraged the creation of a Confederate government that remained until Confederate forces were defeated in late October of that year.
