Such were the means that planted the germs of greatness in the brest of King Alfred who was taken by his father when very young to see the wonders of [Londong in England.]

Alfred the Great was king of Wessex, an early kingdom in southern England, ruling from 871 to 899. As Woods mentions here, he frequently traveled with his father while growing up and, while it is unclear exactly where he traveled during this time, he later fought to reclaim and rebuild London following Danish invasion in 886. King Alfred is still well-known for his multiple victories against the invading Danish forces and beginning the process of English unification, which his son would complete thirty years later.
