Memoir 2, Page 101, Benjamin Dill

"The Confederacy had felt this editor's helping hand in many a high sounding Editorial in the Memphis Appeal"

If Woods had his information correct, this man was Benjamin Dill, editor of the Memphis Daily Appeal. This newspaper was a traveling Confederate publication that, as the name indicates, had previously been based out of Memphis. Following the start of the war and the Union occupation of the city, the newspaper moved south to Grenada, Mississippi, and then on to Jackson, Atlanta, and Montgomery until its final capture in Columbus, Georgia in April 1865. It’s possible that Woods and his fellow prisoners were placed aboard a steamer along with the famous editor; however, it seems strange that the prisoners were allowed to wander free around the ship as to allow the young men to steal this much money.
