Memoir 2, Page 50, Union Leagues

"According to the best information I have, there was some organizations of the Union League in New York and other northern States"

As Woods mentions, there were Union Leagues organized during the Civil War in New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago. These organizations were designed to maintain support for the Union, Lincoln, and the war amongst middle class members of the cities. These three clubs still exist and continue to accept members, now serving as social, rather than patriotic, organizations.
